New Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection gameplay shows there'll be as much monster conservation as there is carving
Capcom drop by the Future Game Show to give us an exclusive look at Twisted Reflection's combat, world and monster husbandry
Capcom dropped by the Future Games Show Spring Showcase Powered by HyperX to show some new Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection gameplay, with community manager Joe Bustos giving us a run down on what we can expect to see in this third instalment.
Twisted Reflections sees you taking on the role of a young prince or princess - heir to the kingdom Azuria, who's also the last Rathalos Rider and the leader of the country's Rangers. Alongside all this multitasking it's up to you to prevent a civil war, as the nations of Azuria and Vermeil face up against a crystal encroachment that's tearing the lands apart as it spreads. With your ranger team and royal palico Rudy in tow, it's up to you to uncover the truth behind the approaching disaster in order to stop it.
As you see from the new gameplay, that means exploring a beautiful and stylised world, seamlessly switching between flying and exploration as you journey through it's expansive areas. When you inevitably find danger in the shape of wild monsters, combat is turn based, using a rock-paper-scissor style system of Power, Speed, and Technical skills to fight the creatures you encounter. It's full of strategy, as you juggle close and long range attacks, or bring your whole team together to deal huge amounts of damage via a new Synchro Rush ability. Just as you'd expect from the series, defeating creatures lets you then use the materials you get to craft better weapons and armor to take on stronger threats.
But it's not just about killing things. In Twisted Reflection you'll be able to raise a team of monsties (monster besties). This includes a new features called habitat restoration, where you can nurture endangered species, repopulate areas and hatch monsties with special traits and mutations. That includes creatures like Chatacabra, Rey Dau, Arkveld and more.
Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection will be out on PC, PS5, Switch 2 and Xbox Series X on March 13 and there's a free PC demo you can play now. Not only will that give you a taste of what to expect, your demo character and save data will carry over to the full game.
