"The game and all of you deserve a proper launch": Dev delays extraction shooter the day before release and hits the emergency Early Access button after Steam players break the servers
Servers are getting revamped
Running a playtest of any kind can be extremely illuminating. In the case of Sand: Raiders of Sophie, an upcoming extraction shooter that borrows the roving fortress concept from Howl's Moving Castle, a public session has led the devs to change the release plan entirely.
The FPS recently held a server slam on the back of being shown at Summer Game Fest 2026, leading to a larger windfall of findings than expected. "We've spent many hours on our chats and in forums digesting the feedback and evaluating ideas on features, balancing, and the general game direction," developers Hologryph and TowerHaus say in an update on Steam.
"It's clear we need to more closely involve the community in our development," they add. "And so we've decided to release into Early Access to work towards the best possible version of Sand: Raiders of Sophie."
Originally, the game was going to come out today, June 10, but those plans have been altered to an early access release on June 22. The added time will allow for some infrastructure changes, as the team says they "can't reliably serve enough players" under the current regime.
The data gleaned from the slam has allowed them to fix "many" of the main problems, but there are still more to get, and from the sounds of things, the popularity highlighted others that weren't as obvious. A "comprehensive roadmap" will come with the playable launch, as well. "The game and all of you deserve a proper launch," the update reads.
Taking place on a desert planet - the eponymous Sophie - Sand involves building and customizing your walking base in order to scavenge around for loot, competing against the harsh landscape and other players. The weapons and aesthetic are Western-themed, making it feel like Firefly and Cowboy Bebop with a little bit of Dune. I can see it doing well, should it be stable enough.
"The community is the core of this game," the post finishes, "and seeing the passion and hundreds of hours put in from players during playtests, we believe it’s important to listen to you. You said it loud and clear: fix the issues, and listen to us. Roger."
