Final Fantasy 14 gets a shoutout in Deltarune Chapter 5 with an Easter egg that forever immortalizes one dev's love of the MMO
Cat meets cat world
Have you heard of the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy 14? Well, Deltarune Chapter 5 is trying to spread the word.
Deltarune Chapter 5 continued the game's story with another new and bonkers episode yesterday, but hidden in between its vibrant pixels is an Easter egg with the subtlety of a sledgehammer smashing eggs. Spotted by Redditor MaximumCompany8921, there are some lines in the new chapter that not-so-quietly nod at Square Enix's evergreen hit.
FFXIV nod in Deltarune Ch5 from r/ffxiv
"There's some drawing by Temmi of her with an additional set of ears)", a text bubble reads. "(Seems to be motivating you to play a certain MMORPG...)" - perhaps one with an expanded free trial...
For those who don't know, Temmie is a cat-like character in the shared Undertale/Deltarune universe who's based on one of the real-world artists behind the game, Temmie Chang. Both share a name, and both evidently love Final Fantasy 14.
Real-world Temmie Chang has notably created tons of really cool Final Fantasy 14 fan art over the years - like the one below - primarily of her Miqo'te character who belongs to the feline-humanoid-hybrid race. So, the reference to in-game Temmie's extra pair of ears likely implies that she, too, loves the Miqo'te (unless, I don't know, she bought a pair of bunny ears from the Gold Saucer or something). Very meta.

Will we ever see what Deltarune Temmie's Miqo'te looks like? Is she excited for Evercold? What class does she main? Our best bet for answers is probably in Deltarune Chapter 6, which is aiming to launch sometime next year according to lead dev Toby Fox.
