Not releasing a new Fallout game alongside the popular Amazon Prime TV show might seem like a missed opportunity, but Obsidian Entertainment co-founder and Fallout: New Vegas writer Chris Avellone reckons the decision was likely a "personal" one for the devs.
It's now been over a decade since Fallout 4, so to say fans have been patiently waiting for the next mainline entry would be an understatement. Thankfully, Bethesda has now revealed the tiniest glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel with confirmation that Fallout 5 is "currently in preproduction," albeit with The Elder Scrolls 6 remaining the team's priority.
Beyond that, it's also been confirmed that remasters of both Fallout 3 and New Vegas are on the way, as well as a new game that's being developed by New Vegas studio Obsidian, which raises the question – why didn't Bethesda align any of these releases with the first or second season of its TV show? Asked about why we've not seen more Obsidian-led Fallout games or a new title to coincide with the show on a new episode of the Human Can Opener podcast on YouTube (below), Avellone gives his thoughts.
"I think whatever the decision was not to do that, it didn't feel like a business decision," he begins, saying that to him, it appeared to be a more "personal" one. "But I don't know for sure," he adds.
What "personal" factors might have come into play here are another matter that Avellone doesn't elaborate on, but to suggest it wasn't a business decision would certainly track. After all, the TV show saw the existing series surge in popularity as fans new and old were inspired to jump back in. Just imagine how popular a brand new game would have been if it launched around the same time? Well, it's not like the Fallout TV series is over yet, so who knows, perhaps one of those upcoming releases will align with one of the future seasons.
