One of the episodes of the upcoming animated show Maul – Shadow Lord features a deep-cut reference that only hardcore Star Wars fans will get. The spin-off stars Darth Maul in a new adventure set around a year after the events of The Clone Wars, and before A New Hope.
Ahead of its premiere in April, the show has unveiled the names of all its season 1 episodes, with The HoloFiles spotting an amazing Revenge of the Sith Easter egg in the eighth chapter. As the outlet explains, back in 2004, the third film of George Lucas' prequel trilogy had many rumored titles before the official one was announced, with the most prominent of them being The Creeping Fear.
Over two decades later, a rumor has become canon in an unexpected way, as Maul – Shadow Lord episode 8 is officially titled The Creeping Fear. We forgive you if you didn't catch this very (very) deep-cut reference to the Star Wars lore, and we salute you with admiration if you did!
We'll have to wait to see if this reference is just the show's creators winking at fans for the fun of it, or if it will have consequences in the story. For now, thanks to the recently unveiled new trailer for Maul – Shadow Lord, we can expect exciting lightsaber duels and impressive action sequences.
The animated show sees Maul cross paths with a young Jedi Padawan named Devon Izara as he attempts to rebuild his criminal syndicate away from the Empire. However, detective Brander Lawson is chasing him, looking to put a stop to Maul's criminal activities before they attract the attention of the Empire.
Sam Witwer leads the show's voice cast as Maul, alongside Gideon Adlon as Devon Izara, Oscar nominee Wagner Moura as Brander Lawson, and Richard Ayoade as the droid Two-Boots.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord releases on Disney Plus on April 6. In the meantime, check out our guide to the other upcoming Star Wars movies and shows to get up to speed on everything else on the way from the galaxy far, far away.
