Daredevil: Born Again season 2 showrunner Dario Scardapane and executive producer Sana Amanat say they're "two of the most brutal critics" as both fans and creators of the hit Disney Plus show.
"I think the thing that we try to do consistently is we take all the stuff from the books, we take all the stuff from the fans, we take all the stuff from the Netflix show, we take all the stuff that worked and didn't work in season one, and it all kind of goes into a pot," Scardapane tells GamesRadar+, when asked how they used fan feedback to approach this season. "And we try and build a story that satisfies as much as possible, and at the end of the day, delivers on story."
Though the season fared well with the majority of critics and fans, sitting at 87% and 78% scores on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively, some took issue with the at times wonky CGI, the pacing of certain fight choreography, and the immediate killing of a beloved character from the Netflix series. Our own review gave it a 2.5 out of 5, writing that it "fails to understand what made the Netflix series so great."
It's also worth noting that the revival series initially had a different set of showrunners and directors, and was set to be more of a legal procedural where Matt Murdock didn't put on the Daredevil suit until the last few episodes of the season. It was ultimately Kevin Feige who reportedly swooped in and brought in Punisher producer and writer Scardapane, as well as Ms. Marvel comic co-creator Sana Amanat.
"I think that there's so many different kinds of expectations that come into something that's this large of [an] IP that's beloved by so many. I think part of my job is to build a good story backbone. And then we try and bring in all the things that fans are nitpicky about, or the fans really love. It's a tightrope, but at the end of the day, and, and I really appreciate what you said, when you watch an episode and it works..."
This particular season sees the return of Jessica Jones, a new iteration of White Tiger, a new villain created for the show named Mr. Charles (played by Matthew Lillard), and Kingpin in all of his tyrannical Mayor of New York City glory. The latest trailers have also shown us a new, perhaps even more lethal side to Bullseye...
"But we're also, we're also the nitpicky fans in the room," Amanat adds. "We go in there being like, 'Ooh, we wanna try this. We wanna do this,' and like, a lot of the efforts are trying to just get, like, the little kid inside of us excited about what could be cool moments."
