The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3 hasn't been officially announced yet, but given that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is on track to have one of the biggest opening weekends of the year, it's only a matter of time before a third trip to the Mushroom Kingdom is confirmed.
As the sequel to one of the best video game movies, and an adaptation of one of the best Mario games, the Super Mario Galaxy Movie had much to live up to. Naturally, a lot goes down, which you can read all about in our Super Mario Galaxy ending explained. And with two meaty post-credits scenes that clue us in on the future of the Nintendo-verse on screen, there's already much we can infer and speculate about when it comes to a potential third movie.
If you're hungering for more star-powered adventures after The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, you've come to the right place, because I've gathered everything you need to know about The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3, including release date, plot and cast speculation. But beware, major spoilers for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie follow, so if you haven't seen the latest Mario movie, proceed with caution!
Article continues belowThe Super Mario Bros. Movie 3 release date speculation
The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3 hasn't been officially announced yet, so of course there is no official release date either. However, Jack Black may have let slip that a third Mario movie is releasing in 2029, which would make sense as there was also a 3-year gap between the first and second movies, which released in 2023 and 2026, respectively.
Could we see another Nintendo-verse movie before then? It's possible. Many speculated that a Donkey Kong movie could be in the pipeline after the simian smasher's substantial role in the first movie, while the second movie tees up a potential Star Fox spin-off. In other words, animation studio Illumination is going to be plenty busy over the coming years.
When can we expect the Super Mario Bros. Movie 3 trailer?
It's much too early for there to be a Super Mario Bros. Movie 3 trailer, given the movie isn't even currently in production (that we know of, anyway). Though clearly Nintendo and Illumination are thinking ahead about the look of the third film, with major figures like Daisy introduced in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
The first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie dropped on November 12, 2025, just over 5 months before the movie was released on April 1, 2026. So we can reasonably guess that a trailer for the third movie won't be released for about 2-3 years, potentially around late 2028.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3 cast
Again, this is all speculative as a potential third movie is yet to be confirmed, but there are certain characters we can all but guarantee will appear in a hypothetical third Super Mario movie. Chief among them: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad and Bowser.
Super Mario Galaxy Movie newcomers, like Rosalina, Yoshi, Bowser Jr. and Daisy, would almost certainly feature in a third film as well. Fox McCloud's return feels less certain, given that he declares his intention to return home across the stars in the film's mid-credits scene. Could the likes of Donkey Kong make a comeback after (mostly) sitting out the second movie? Depends if those rumors of a DK spin-off hold any water.
For now, here's who we'd expect to appear in a Super Mario Bros. 3 Movie:
- Chris Pratt as Mario
- Charlie Day as Luigi
- Jack Black as Bowser
- Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach
- Keegan-Michael Key as Toad
- Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.
- Brie Larson as Rosalina
- Donald Glover as Yoshi
- TBC as Daisy
The Super Mario Bros. Movie 3 story speculation
The biggest hint we have about the Super Mario Bros. 3 Movie plot is the film's post-credits scene, which introduces Princess Daisy to the Mario galaxy. A slightly more tomboyish counterpart to Princess Peach, Daisy made her video game debut in 1989 Game Boy launch title, Super Mario Land. She is the ruler of Sarasaland, which is made up of four separate kingdoms inspired by Ancient Egypt, Bermuda, Easter Island, and Ancient China. Given that the Mario movies have now explored both the Mushroom Kingdom and space, Sarasaland would be a logical and diverse destination to head to next.
Bowser and Bowser Jr. may have been imprisoned by the end of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, but never count a fire-breathing father/son dragon turtle duo out. Many wondered if we might finally glimpse Wario and/or Waluigi in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. This doesn't happen, but could they be introduced as the villains in the third movie? Anything's possible right now.
It's also a safe bet that we won't be heading back to the 'real' world for the third movie, as other than a brief Yoshi escapade, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is set entirely in the Mushroom Kingdom and the stars beyond. And with the Super Mario Galaxy Movie already visiting at least one major Mario Odyssey destination in the Sand Kingdom, it doesn't seem likely that Odyssey would be the direct inspiration for the third film.
One major source of speculation is the idea that the Mario movies, and rumored spin-offs, could be building towards a Super Smash Bros. movie. There's no real suggestion that could be in the pipeline based on what we're shown in either of the Mario movies to date, so I wouldn't expect a Smash-style crossover to be the basis of the third movie. But who knows what Nintendo and Illumination have cooking.
