Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is officially arriving 3 months early after the animated movie was leaked online in full
The leak made its way online in April
Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender is now set for a summer streaming premiere following the film's leak back in April.
The new animated movie, which serves as a sequel to the Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender, is now set to stream on Paramount Plus beginning on July 25, rather than premiere in theaters on October 9. There will be a panel in Hall H at San Diego Comic Con on July 23, followed by an exclusive fan screening on July 24.
In April, a Twitter user named StillDissin claimed they were accidentally emailed the entirety of the film and allegedly uploaded a non-watermarked version of the entire movie. An arrest was made later that month, with police claiming that the individual had 'unauthorized remote access to the server' (via The Straits Times).
Directed by Lauren Montgomery, the movie sees Avatar Aang, the world's last Airbender, learn of an ancient power that could save his culture from extinction. Per the official synopsis, Aang, with the help of his friends, "embarks on a global quest to find it before it falls into the wrong hands and threatens to upend the peace they sacrificed everything to achieve."
Montgomery previously expressed on her personal Instagram that the movie still deserves to be seen in theaters, writing, "The recent decision to move us from theatrical to streaming might give the impression that the quality wasn’t sufficient, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. This movie deserves to be seen on a big screen!!!"
