The real winners and losers of E3 2015

We're all winners, right?

This year, the real winners of E3 are the players. Yes, yes - this phrase gets trotted out so often, it has become cliche. However, it really does feel like E3 2015 is show that offers something for everyone. Want mega-blockbuster games? Try Fallout 4, Halo 5, Uncharted 4, Ghost Recon Wildlands. Want something more designed? You've got Unravel, Abzu, The Last Guardian. Nostalgia? How about the Final Fantasy 7 remake, Shenmue 3, Rare's back catalogue... It's all here. Games win!

However, for every winner, there's often a loser. We've decided to round up a selection of our personal winners and losers from the show, demonstrating that for every awesome action, there's often a sad or amusing reaction. These aren't really games... more people, events and concepts. And Pele, who is all three.

Winner: Bethesda

For dominating the first day with a giga-ton conference. Which was full of Fallout 4. And Dishonored. And Doom. We can't over-stress how awesome Doom is.

Loser: Square-Enix

For everything that happened on that stage.

Winner: The Xbox 360 generation

For having Microsofts conference pitched entirely at making them happy. And - to be clear - it made a lot of people (us included) very happy.

Loser: Wii U owners

For having to witness Nintendo curtail the Wii U generation, via a public curbstomp of 'games we've already seen too much of, and franchise spin-offs few care for'. The muppets were funny, mind.

Winner: Sony

For now being the Santa-Jesus-Easter-Bunny-Tooth-Fairy of video games.

Loser: PS4 owners hoping for more than remakes and indie games this Christmas

...because all that good stuff is years away.

Winner: That Yarnie guy

For being the most genuinely excited and lovely person at E3.

Loser: The Hoop Gawd guy

It's never good when you spawn a meme during a press conference, and EA's sports community guy did EXACTLY that. Poor fella.

Winner: Pele

For getting paid to derail a whole conference and not giving a damn.

Loser: The guy who interviewed Pele

Poor, poor David Rutter. It was like watching a sporty King Canute trying to turn back a tide of Pele gaffes.

Winner: Tom Clancy

For leaving a legacy that now includes three hugely promising video games.

Loser: Tiger Woods

Sorry Tiger, it's Rory McIlroy's PGA Tour Golf now. EA says so.

Winner: The Last Guardian

For refusing to die.

Loser: Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2

For refusing to die.

Winner: South Park: The Fractured But Whole

For having the best game name at E3.

Loser: Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight

For having the worst game name of E3.

Winner: Evie Frye

For being more of a badass than Jacob Frye in Assassin's Creed Syndicate.

Loser: The man who dressed up as Jacob Frye

For being awkward in front of millions of viewers (and the legendary Aisha Tyler) at the Ubi conference.

Winner: 3DS

Because all the cool Nintendo games are coming to 3DS.

Loser: PS Vita

Because none of the Sony games are coming to Vita. :-(

Winner: Reboots

We got a lot of 'em - Final Fantasy 7, Hitman, The Last Guardian - and they genuinely set our worlds alight.

Loser: Realism

Did you notice how most games were a lot more stylised at E3? There certainly wasn't any talk of 'realistic physics' or 'high polygon counts'. The focus is back on the joy of playing. Sorry, realism: Dreams (pun intended) are better than reality...
