Set in inner-city Gothenburg, Swedish director Ruben Östlund’s suspenser takes inspiration from a series of real-life of scams.

A bunch of 12-year-old youths play mind-games with well-off kids, tricking them out of their expensive, branded gear.

Physical violence isn’t involved; instead, menace and role-play drive events, which slowly but surely come to a head.

For all its impartial, documentary stylings, the film still feels like a contrived platform for debating class inequality and prejudice. Yet several scenes unsettle and the non-professional cast convince.
