Phoenix Wright makes a comeback in Dual Destinies

The loveable defense attorney is back in the courtroom after an 8-year hiatus and it looks like he hasn't even aged a day. His skills in court are still up to snuff in the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attoryney - Dual Destinies demo we played at E3. First thing we noticed was how nice the game looks on the 3DS, regardless of whether 3D slider was on. Instead of the flat 2D character portraits that pop up when someone speaks, they are now 3D and slightly animated. It was a little surprising to see Phoenix and the others make subtle motions but it certainly makes the characters seem more alive.

The crux of the gameplay remains the same, where you poke holes in people's testimonies by bringing up contradicting evidence in your inventory. What's been added is a new mechanic called the Mood Matrix. Athena Cykes is an associate attorney at your firm who has the ability to use a holographic thingamabob on her neck to scan people's emotions. By going over their testimony and detecting the emotions of a witness, you're able to help jog their memory and get a true testimony out of them.

Apollo did show up in our brief 15-minute demo but we're told other familiar characters will return, including Miles Edgeworth. It's like Phoenix Wright never left the court of law once you start pressing the play button to go through pages dialogue.
