One of Westeros’s biggest villains might not make it to the final season of Game of Thrones alive.
Pilou Asbaek, who plays Euron Greyjoy, Theon and Yara’s uncle and the recently-crowned King of the Iron Islands, recently spoke with Miami.com to promote his role in Ghost in the Shell, and when the site asked him what his plans are for the future, he responded, “I may be going to do some more Game of Thrones. Maybe I won’t. I’ll take a break. I want to see my wife and daughter. I’ve missed them a lot.” All seven episodes of season 7 have already finished filming, and it sounds to me like there’s a chance Asbaek may not be returning for the show’s last few episodes.
Even book readers don’t know the final fate of Euron, because the HBO TV series has finally caught up to George R.R. Martin’s novels in nearly every one of its major storylines. But in the books, Euron is far more ruthless than he was portrayed in the last season of the show. I’ve read the novels and was a bit disappointed that the TV scripts didn’t allow for more of Euron’s killer charisma to shine through. But it also sounds like we’ll be seeing him make a big mark very soon. MTV News also spoke with Asbaek, and he revealed that he starts enough shit in the new season “to get satisfied – good satisfied.”
A satisfied Euron can only mean bad news for Theon and Yara, whom he set out to kill as last season came to an end. He’s also got his eye on Dany’s dragons, and let’s get real: we all know that’s not going to end well. My guess is he finds his ‘satisfaction’ by killing either Theon or Yara before Dany sics Drogon and the gang on him for a fiery death. After all, Game of Thrones is getting down to crunch time, and not all of the major players are going to make it through to the final eight episodes. Let’s hope that if Euron does go down, he does so in spectacular fashion.
