The Guardians of the Galaxy team hasn't always been Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot ya know. New members join the team as old ones leave all the time. And in that spirit, director James Gunn has put forward a name he seems to think should appear in Guardians of the Galaxy 3 (or 4, or 5, or... anyway): Adam Warlock.
If you're not familiar, Warlock is a member of the Sovereign People, a genetically perfect race of humanoids that also includes Guardians of the Galaxy 2 antagonist Ayesha. In the comics, he's tangled with Thanos, allied himself with various superteams, and has a plethora of superpowers that border on godlike.
Speaking to SlashFilm, Gunn said that an early draft of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 featured Warlock, but it felt like a bit too much. "[Warlock] was a big part of the screenplay and I realized it was one character too many. And I adored the character. I adored what we had done with him. I think we did something really creative and unique with Adam Warlock. But it was one character too many and I didn’t want to lose Mantis and Mantis was more organically part of the movie anyway. So I decided to save him for later."
"Later" could mean a lot of things, but all evidence points to Guardians 3. Gunn himself said that Warlock will not be in Avengers: Infinity War, and MCU head honcho Kevin Feige also told SlashFilm that, "If [Warlock] appears anywhere in the future, it’ll be in Guardians."
Of course, comic buffs will know that Warlock is hardly the only Guardians member yet to get any screen time. So who else do you think should be added to the roster? Note that not all of these may be possible due to licensing issues, but that all have been, at one point or another, on the team in the comics.
