Guillermo Del Toro has dabbled with superheroes in the past, having directed Blade 2 to deliriously gore-soaked effect, as well as bringing the Hellboy franchise to life. But could we see the Mexican director return to the world of spandex at another juncture in the future?

Del Toro has been linked to a potential Guardians Of The Galaxy movie, and has been discussing his views on superhero movies in general, revealing that he was extremely close to directing Thor before Kenneth Branagh got his hands on it.

"The thing is that I’m not a superhero guy," said Del Toro to Collider . "I like monsters, and when the monster is a superhero, it’s a byproduct. Like Hellboy, the Hulk, Man-Thing, Swamp Thing, Sandman, Constantine, Demon, Dr. Strange, Spectre, Deadman. Those are the superheroes I followed as a kid religiously. I loved when the superhero genre crosses with horror."

"For me," he continues, "to be interested in doing a superhero movie, it would need to be on the dark side or a Jack Kirby property. Kamandi, Demon, Mr. Miracle… I love any Kirby. I came very close to doing Thor because I really wanted to bring the Norse mythology. I was very attracted to doing The Wolverine in Japan, because that’s my favourite chapter in the story of Wolverine. But I’m not a superhero guy. It’s one thing to like something and another to marry it for two, three years."

If that doesn't sound terribly positive going forwards, it's worth bearing in mind that both Guardians Of The Galaxy and Dr. Strange are both fairly "monster" orientated. Not time to rule out a Del Toro collaboration with Marvel just yet then...
