Ghostbusters sequel "will happen" according to Sony

Although it failed to debut at number 1 in America, Ghostbusters notched up a respectable $46 million at the box office in its opening weekend. Perhaps more importantly, the reception from both critics and audiences has been generally positive, and it seems that that combination has Sony distribution chief Rory Bruer feeling very confident about the film's chances at a sequel:

"I expect Ghostbusters to become an important brand and franchise", he told The Wrap. "While nothing has been officially announced yet, there’s no doubt in my mind it will happen".

Without getting into details, Ghostbusters definitely sets itself up for future adventures with its cast. Whether it ultimately comes to pass will likely be dependent on the film's final box office gross, and with a budget of $144 million Sony are probably hoping for a $250-350 million finish.

While the film was far from perfect, I ultimately came away from Ghostbusters thinking I'd like to see more of McCarthy and co in action, so here's hoping Ghostbusters 2 gets green-lit sooner rather than later.

Directed by Paul Feig and starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth, Ghostbusters is out in cinemas now.
