Borderlands movie gears up with X-Men and Spider-Man producers

The long tradition of poorly received video game films continues unabated, but Lionsgate, Gearbox and 2K are going to give it the old Vault Hunter try; the companies have partnered and revealed plans to bring Borderlands to the big screen.

The creative team behind the film will be Avi Arad and his son Ari Arad, who together have helped produce films such as Iron Man, Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man, X-Men, Ghost Rider and Blade. So, a few hits, a few … not-so-hits. What tale they'll tell is anyone's guess, considering Borderlands is less known for its story and more for its loot-and-shoot mix of RPG and FPS genres. Still, this is a sci-fi world where self-aware robots curse at hick car mechanics as psychics and ninjas hunt for elusive pirate treasure - there's bound to be something good for the screen.

There are no solid details on the film yet, as today's news is mostly an announcement of intent. We don't know who will write, star, direct, when it will be out, or even if it will be live-action or CG. Still, is it too much to hope that Joseph Gordon-Levitt will get a starring role as Butt Stallion from Borderlands 2? Hey, if George Clooney can be Stan's dog in South Park, I think Mr. Gordon-Levitt can be a pony made of diamonds.
