50 Most Hated Movies Ever Made

Alien Resurrection (1997)

The Movie: A cloned Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) is thrown back into the nightmare in Jean-Pierre Jeunet's fourth instalment of the Alien saga.

Why It Was Hated: An unnecessary addition to the story, muzzled by the law of diminishing returns and the misjudged tone of black comedy. The less said about the Newborn, the better.

Typical Online Review: "NOTHING could have prepared me for just how bad this movie is. How the fuck could something like this happen? It's literally one of THE very worst movies I've ever seen and Wynona Ryder puts on what is probably the worst performance of all time. This is much worse than some of the shit i've seen on SyFy. Sequels usually suck but I'm having trouble thinking of a bigger drop off in the quality of films between sequels." DarkKnight81, JoBlo

Spider-man 3 (2007)

The Movie: Peter Parker stops having fun, in the face of a triple onslaught from Venom, Sandman and a new Green Goblin.

Why It Was Hated: Everybody knows threequels try to do too much, but Marvel went ahead anyway (and largely against Raimi's wishes). Result: huge box-office but a major fan backlash.

Typical Online Review: "The main villains get only a short amount of screen time, and by the "big" ending you're just wondering when Dawson's Creek is going to end and when Spiderman 3 will begin. 90% of the film consists of Peter Parker walking around, crying, and making a fool of himself in various over-the-top ways." imajestr, IMDb

Sex And The City 2 (2010)

The Movie: Carrie, Samantha and the other two head off to enjoy/insult Abu Dhabi in a chick flick that is longer than 2001: A Space Odyssey .

Why It Was Hated: Well, the fellas would have hated it regardless, but even female fans turned on a show that had lost its bite for xenophobic cheap shots and self-parody.

Typical Online Review: "A horrible movie, with nothing to offer either than the envy of you being in adu dabi, honestly i should have never even entered the cinema room to watch this low acting, plotless piece of shit." Pedro H, Rotten Tomatoes

Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End (2007)

The Movie: Captain Jack Sparrow is stuck in Davy Jones' locker, which means Keira and Orlando are the stars until they can free him. Please, hurry.

Why It Was Hated: Where the first Pirates film was praised for its lightness of touch, by the time of the two-and-three-quarter hour threequel, this was a victim of its waterlogged world-building.

Typical Online Review: "I feel that it could have been an hour shorter and been awesome. It d-r-a-g-g-e-d so bad. I kept checking the time wondering when Jack would show up and when it would ever get good. Just as it started getting good, BLAM more suckage." roachc42, Yahoo Answers

Planet Of The Apes (2001)

The Movie: Tim Burton takes a break from making Johnny Depp look weird to turn future wife Helena Bonham Carter into a chimp.

Why It Was Hated: Burton failed to see the potential for political allegory or satire in the story, seeing only a bunch of talking apes to film chasing Marky Mark.

Typical Online Review: "Nobody knows why the apes look down on the humans so much or why the humans don’t fight back. Especially since in this one apes are afraid of water. You fuckin humans ever heard of a dam? Just flood the fuckers. Planet of the beavers coulda figured that one out why can’t planet of the humans?" Vern, Outlawvern.com

The Avengers (1998)

The Movie: The classic eccentric action-comedy of British 1960s TV gets a blockbuster makeover with Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman taking on Sean Connery.

Why It Was Hated: A string of surreal set-piees untethered to any controlling intelligence, this is a film apparently made by people who didn't "get" what made the original such a camp, catty delight.

Typical Online Review: "IT was worse than my wildest nightmares -- and I have an excellent imagination. Thurman was as bad as I thought, Fiennes had nothing to play to. Macnee, oh, how it could have improved if we'd seen him. I think this movie is terrible because they didn't get the joke. The Avengers is cheeky, campy, fun, and never without some form of the double entendre somewhere. Apparently, the script writes never actually saw the series and didn't get the joke." maltcavet, IMDb

Pearl Harbour (2000)

The Movie: Michael Bay follows up his mega-hit disaster flick Armageddon with a swerve into real-life tragedy, aided by stars Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett.

Why It Was Hated: It desperately wants to be Titanic , but the mismatch between the earnest intent of the material and the director's fondness for blowing shit up leaves things alternating between dull and bombastic.

Typical Online Review: "I was conned into watching Pearl Harbor on the basis that "it's so bad it's good". Like hell it is! This film is just spleen-rupturingly awful! How anyone in their right mind can possibly give it ten stars is beyond me. It's the movie equivalent of a full frontal lobotomy. In fact if anyone from the CIA is reading, I suggest using it as an aggressive interrogation technique." Alan, Internet Movie Script Database

The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)

The Movie: Alan Moore's cheeky British spin on the superhero tag-team became a notorious disaster that drove star Sean Connery into retirement.

Why It Was Hated: Moore's disciples sided with the cankanterous comic writer after he disowned it for sucking out the originality into a cookie-cutter blockbuster.

Typical Online Review: "This is the only movie that I can think of where after it ended, I was seething with anger at the waste of money and time on the part of myself and everyone involved in making it. No wonder Alan Moore refused to have anything to do with V for Vendetta (a phenomenal film) after this debacle. It's not bad in an entertaining way, like Showgirls. It's bad in a way that makes you want to claw your eyes out." pleh, IMDb

Battlefield Earth (2000)

The Movie: Star/producer John Travolta uses his post-Tarantino cachet to make his dream project, an adaptation of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard's sci-fi epic.

Why It Was Hated: Travolta's hubris - he declared the film "like Star Wars , only better" - became a rallying cry to disparage a film of universally poor artistic choices, not least amongst them the hairdos.

Typical Online Review: "The end result is a product that is a real mess with almost nothing of value in it. It is relentlessly shoddy and I almost wish the 'worst film ever' hype would drop off just so that this film could slowly fade from our memory and be lost in time." bob the moo, IMDb

The Wicker Man (2006)

The Movie: Neil LaBute remakes the British pagan-horror classic with Crazy Nic Cage taking on the role of the naïve copper first essayed by Edward Woodward.

Why It Was Hated: LaBute's notoriously non-PC opinions turned the murderous community into a harem of harpies, the misogyny symbolised by a soon-to-be-infamous scene where Cage punches a woman while dressed in a bear suit.

Typical Online Review: "what ever you do do not waste your time on this pointless. movie. A remake that did not need to be retold. Everyone coming out of the theater had the same comments. Worst movie I ever saw. Save your time and money!!!" drummerofgash, IMDb
