50 Greatest Father/Son Movie Moments

Happiness (1998)

The Moment: Dark stuff, as Billy (Dylan Baker) admits to his son Billy (Rufus Read) that he sodomised an 11-year-old boy. “Would you ever fuck me?” asks Billy. “No. I jerk off instead,” says his father. Yikes.

If They Were Mother And Daughter: That wouldn't dilute the disturbing any.

Austin Powers In Goldmember (2002)

The Moment: Austin (Mike Myers) tracks down his father in 1975, and discovers him having a right nice time with a couple of groovy ladies. Who knew being kidnapped was so glamorous?

If They Were Mother And Daughter: We'd find the mother being waited on by shirtless, feather-wafting chipendales.

The Pursuit Of Happyness (2006)

The Moment: Having been evicted from his home, Chris (Will Smith) will stop at nothing to provide for his son Christopher (Jaden Smith), even going so far as finding them somewhere to stay in the form of a subway station bathroom.

If They Were Mother And Daughter: They'd be called Christie and Christina.

Transamerica (2005)

The Moment: Transsexual Sabrina 'Bree' Osbourne (Felicity Huffman) bonds with teenage son Toby Wilkins (Kevin Zegers), except things start to go wrong when Toby decides he fancies Bree – only to find out she’s really his dad. Awkward.

If They Were Mother And Daughter:
They pretty much almost are, to be honest, especially with Toby’s floppy hair.

Star Wars: Episode VI - Return Of The Jedi (1983)

The Moment: Luke (Mark Hamill) comes face-to-face with his father for the first time, as Darth Vader is unmasked and the two share a moment of heartbreaking sentiment before Vader – or Anakin – perishes.

If They Were Mother And Daughter: It'd be Carrie Fisher craning over the dying body of Natalie Portman. Which would just be weird.

Frequency (2000)

The Moment: John Sullivan (James Caviezel) makes contact with his dead father (Dennis Quaid) through an old radio that connects them through time. John warns his pa of a devastating warehouse fire, saving him from the event that caused his death.

If They Were Mother And Daughter: They'd be too busy bickering/gossiping to do any life saving.

Finding Nemo (2003)

The Moment: After an entire film spent separated, Nemo and brave pa Marlin are reunited. It all looks to have been for nothing, though, when Nemo ends up crushed on the sea bed by a school of groupers…

If They Were Mother And Daughter: Let's face it, Marlin is pretty much as fretful as any mother, meaning not much would change here.

Big Fish (2003)

The Moment: Edward Bloom (Albert Finney) and his son Will (Billy Crudup) finally reconcile after a lifetime of distance. Will takes Edward down to the river, where he is greeted by people from his past - before turning into a big fish. Typically Burton, but moving stuff.

If They Were Mother And Daughter: The fish bit would still be really odd.

The Bicycle Thieves (1948)

The Moment: When Antonio Ricci’s (Lamberto Maggiorani) bike is stolen, he attempts to track it down with the help of his son. In a sweet little restaurant scene, Antonio talks to his son Bruno, revealing how his dreams have been shattered.

If They Were Mother And Daughter: The bike would be a pretty little number with a basket on the front.

Jaws (1975)

The Moment: Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) puts aside his fears of the ocean in order to protect his children after a shark attack in the sailing harbour on Amity Island. He even manages to find time for them amid the chaos, as in the scene when he and his son mimic each other at the dinner table. Bless.

If They Were Mother And Daughter: They'd be too busy cooking dinner to have any time for mimicking fun.
