The rumours and speculation are finally confirmed, folks. Marvel has today announced that Anthony and Joe Russo are officially signed on to direct its mega-event Avengers: Infinity War. The third outing for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes will be split into two parts with the first set to land on May 4, 2018, and its conclusion due the following year on May 3, 2019. This of course signals the end of Joss Whedon’s reign at the Avengers helm.
After making their first splash in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the brothers were immediately locked in to direct its sequel. As Captain America: Civil War - which boasts a cast that practically rivals Age Of Ultron - heads into production shortly it’s believed that the storyline will run into the events of Infinity War. In an effort to keep momentum going it certainly makes sense for the Russos to carry on that story.
When Marvel announced Infinity War last year, creative head Kevin Feige described it as “the beginning of the culmination of everything that has come before." With the two Russos installed at the helm of this gigantic cinematic event 2018 really can’t come soon enough.
