ZombiU footage shows off permadeath WiiU survival horror

Though we wouldn't have expected it from a potential Wii U launch title, ZombiU seems intent on showcasing its hardcore street cred. This latest trailer gives us a glimpse at some of the survival horror in the game including a "permadeath" type of feature.

We put permadeath in quotation marks because it's not really permadeath if you can regain all of your gear. The dev makes it clear that the character dies permanently, but your backpack/inventory (which is really the soul of any playable character) can be retrieved. We'd love to see a Dark Souls-esque system in which you have only one life to get back to your body, kill your zombified self and retrieve your items before your corpse wanders off forever.

I always thought this game looked cool, but after this video, day 1 purchase!

Thought the Wii was meant to be very family-orientated, or did they realise they had to balance the act between family and hardcore gamer, to stay competitive with other consoles?

That was the Wii, which even in itself has some pretty great games on there that aren't "family oriented" it's just people won't buy them. This is the WiiU, similar name, different console.

This game literally makes me want a Wii U. I just hope the pricing isn't outrageous when it releases.

Good to see Nintendo further embracing the more violent, hardcore genre. If the Wii U keeps getting more innovative and hardcore games like this rather than more run-of-the-mill type junk, I could care less if it isn't "next-gen" material.

Why is this even being made a big deal? This is the absolute worst excuse of permadeath out there. Whatever happened to original games like Omikron where characters were actually important and permadeath actually had consequences?

I thought it was pretty good myself. You always have to be careful or else you will die and lose all of your equipment and have to start from the beginning. I guess this attaches us to the character somewhat but I would like to know how much we have to backtrack because if it isn't done right the whole mechanic is killed.
