Xbox 360 was named the station's favorite system -- which falls in line with the award distribution.

EA Games president reveals "extension" of driving and skateboarding series in next fiscal year, commits long-term to Mass Effect, and says next Need for Speed will return to series' roots.

Another new franchise EA is prepping a sequel for is Mass Effect, which was announced for the PC today. From the very first time now EA-owned developer BioWare showed it off in 2005, the role-playing game franchise was touted as trilogy. EA Games president Frank Gibeau's presentation today suggested it may not end there, as he told analysts that it "will be a franchise for [EA] for a very long time." He also said that going forward, EA will take over publishing duties on the Mass Effect franchise from Microsoft Game Studios, which handled the game's initial release on the Xbox 360.

Electronic Arts has become known for the amount of downloadable content they've tossed on Xbox Live, most infamously charging for what were essentially cheat codes in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007. Thankfully, however, that won't be the approach for their Tony Hawk rival, Skate.

"We're not planning any new content for Skate 1 ... We didn't want to go back and ask people for more money to get more shoes and shirts," said EA Black Box Executive Producer Scott Blackwood in an Afterthoughts interview featured in latest issue of EGM. "That's not how we wanted to enter this market."
After almost ten years of domination by the Tony Hawk franchise, skateboarding has a chance to be reinvented by EA's Skate. It does skating differently. It does skating brilliantly. It does skating better than Tony has for a while.

The control scheme practically is the game itself. Forget everything Tony told you and learn this: The analog stick is your foot. Flick up to kick up. Scoop it around the bottom to shove the board in a similar direction. All the moves for tricks must be mastered, ...

Skate, the skateboarding sim from Electronic Arts, is the most realistic skateboarding game developed to date. But could it also be the most important? EA is hoping so, as it looks to redefine a genre that is synonymous with Tony Hawk, a franchise still going strong eight years after the release of the most revolutionary skate title, well, ever, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater. Hyperbole aside, we look back at the skate games that made the genre what it is today. And like most good things in life, our story starts in the '80s.
Sept 12. This news was posted yesterday to EA's Skate forums and over all, people don't seem to be terribly upset by the news. EA even posted a small apology to those who were anxiously awaiting the big day:

If you were planning on staying home sick on the 12th to name your first gap or if (like us) you bought a bunch of guacamole that expires on the 12th for your Skate party we send our sincerest apologies!
Mastering EAs upcoming extreme sports title, Skate, due to be released on 28 September and 12 October for 360 and PS3 respectively, isnt going to be a walk in the concrete-covered park.

Just as the real-world skate scene is full of bone-breaking bail videos, Skates virtual community will soon be bursting with eye-popping clips. And to get the tiny wheals rolling, the Skate team has produced a trailer demonstrating that even the pros can get it horribly wrong sometimes.

We can hardly stop playing Xbox Live's Skate demo. It's so stylish, so kinetic, so right. If you haven't been able to play it yet (PS3 owners, for instance, as Sony is currently sitting on the completed demo) then you might not understand what all the fuss is about.

When we published our "Eight things you MUST know about the Skate demo" earlier this week, we thought we were pretty much ahead of the game. Or at least, you know, equal to it. But as this collection of the best Skate ...
Skate is easily one of our favourite games of the year. It's solid, gorgeous, incredible fun to play, and now those brill chaps in charge of Xbox Live have uploaded a 30 minute demo of the Electronic Arts skateboarding sim. You really have to play this.

If you're already a fan, like us, you've probably nailed through the demo's tutorials and challenges by now. But there's plenty more to discover. So here's eight things you must know, in order to squeeze maximum satisfaction out of ...

Coming from those talented chaps at EA, Skate looks to fill that gap left by Activision Tony Hawk series that's became more and more obsessed with wild and wicked combos that simply wouldn't be achievable out on the skate parks in the real world.
Microsoft-owned in-game ad firm Massive Inc. has inked a deal with Electronic Arts that will bring dynamic ads to five high-profile titles.

Madden NFL 08 (Xbox 360, PC), NASCAR 08 (Xbox 360), NHL 08 (Xbox 360), Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 (Xbox 360, PC) and Skate (Xbox 360) will all go live in the Massive Network this year.

Microsoft bought Massive Inc. in 2006 in a bid to get in on the big growth expected in the advertising medium.

Massive Network delivers ads via broadband that can be changed ...

Microsoft Corp. said on Wednesday it will pipe advertisements into a slate of popular sports video games from Electronic Arts Inc. including its best-selling "Madden" football franchise.

The deal, which also covers EA's "NASCAR," "Tiger Woods" golf, "NHL" hockey and upcoming "Skate" skateboarding games, is a significant win for Microsoft as it tries to build an early lead over rivals such as Google Inc. in putting ads into video games.

The deal is also the latest indication of increasingly cozy ties between Microsoft, the world's biggest software company and EA, the No. 1 independent video game publisher.
Still, the base dynamic - flipping, popping and shoving that board - still have us enthralled. We'll be expecting a more in-depth look at this promising rider in the coming months. Because if we don't, ...
If you're big into skateboarding, chances are you're big into music, which is why games based around gravity defying trickery and high speed self-propulsion on a bit of wheel-enhanced wood generally boast the best soundtracks this side of GTA. And newcomer to the spot - the incoming Skate - promises to carry on the tradition of killer soundtracks in spectacular, ear-pleasing style. Check out the play list below to see what musical treats are in store.

There are 45 songs in total, with a ...
Naturally, Electronic Arts looks to outmaneuver the Activision series with music in its upcoming rival skateboarding title, SKATE. The new game, which appears on PS3 and Xbox 360 in Autumn 2007, is set to boast 45 songs from artists such as David Bowie, Nirvana, N.W.A. and The Ramones. Without the rush of getting a review on a website, they've had the time to play the beta thoroughly and find out exactly how balanced the new weapons and maps are.
When we last saw EA's Skate - a back-to-basics skateboarding sim - we were equally enthralled and excited by its hugely satisfying board-based action. But, with this brand new video rolling into our laps recently, we've started to have a few worries. Will Skate's beautiful simplicity be undone by its grand ambition?

Pass your eyes over this new video in a cursory fashion, and all you'll find is another example of the game's entertainingly believable tricks and neat natural lines. Watch ...
Tony Hawk's had his day in the sun. Seriously, for years we sat and played eight iterations of the once-innovative skateboard king. We used to amaze ourselves and others with each million-point combo, but it was probably around the time we started to play as Bam Margera that our hearts sank. No one legitimately stepped up to The Hawk until now. EA and their bottomless wallets are crafting SKATE, which they hope will redefine what skateboarding culture in videogames is all about. Balmer: We're stoked about his involvement. He doesn't need the money and only gets involved with projects that align with his vision for skateboarding. He's helped us understand the physics behind huge airs, and been involved in extensive mo-cap sessions. He's helped the game feel "right."

The screenshots are a) Very real looking and b) Very empty. Will the game be predominantly a solo experience?

The world doesn't need two skateboarding games... because, arguably, it hasn't yet got one. Tony Hawk? The argument among hardcore skaters and disillusioned fans of Activision's franchise is that it stopped being a skateboarding game around THUG2, losing sight of the simple thrills of real skating and embracing Jackass culture to gloss over its insanely-complicated, obscenely video-gamey controls and swirl of baffling combos.

Hardcore Tony Hawk players casually toss out 100-trick combos, ...
Activision's venerable Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series certainly pushed its own boundaries with the enjoyable Project 8, but Skate is something altogether different.

SKATE is the name for Electronic Arts' brand new skateboard game project and will be released in 2007 for Xbox 360 and PS3. EA made the official announcement in the last few hours that the publisher was readying a rival for the long-running Tony Hawk series.

EA reckons SKATE is a move away from "the typical button-mashing gameplay of past skating games," surely a thinly veiled criticism of the Tony Hawk skateboarding series and their beat-'em-up style button-tapping combos. SKATE will, ...
