Radio 1 goes Big on Gaming Weekend

Your chance to vote for the best game ever in Radio 1's first ever Big Gaming Weekend

What's the greatest game of all time? Does Half-Life outgun Halo to the accolade? Is Metal Gear better than Mario 64? Would Fallout 3 finish above Final Fantasy VII? Well now, thanks to Radio 1 and 1Extra's 'Big Gaming Weekend', you'll get a chance to settle this argument, as listeners can vote for the best title of all time.

The list of 100 games, chosen by a group of industry experts - including our sister site CVG - has been given to Radio 1, and you'll be able to vote for your 3 favourite games from that list by visiting 1Xtra's homepage on May 22nd.

Above: Find out how good Fearne Cotton is at COD

One of the station's DJs, Scott Mills, will launch the poll on May 22nd during his breakfast show between 6:30am and 10am, with the results being aired on MistaJam's Bank Holiday Monday Show, which you can tune into either on Radio 1 or 1Xtra between 7pm and 10pm.

And they'll even be airing a host of video game soundtracks between 4pm and 7pm on the Bank Holiday Show. So you can have a party in your ears, as you hum along to classics like Sonic's Green Hill Zone or Portal's ace ending tune 'Still Alive'.

Actual first! Sorry couldn't resist.

Anyway, i'm not really looking forward to this. Radio 1 will just be milking it so much.
(and since when has scott mills had a breakfast show?)

Mills soemtimes fills in for that fat prick Moyles.

And got to agree with the milking thing. Now that gaming is hot property we'll have DJ's and Z-list celebs chatting about how they've gamed for years, blah blah blah.

Sorry, but I refuse to believe Fearne Cotton has any remote interest in gaming. She probably played a bit of Smash Brothers at her boyfriends house, once.

radio 1 probably will milk it, although 'that fat prick chris moyles' ( who happens to be one of the most popular DJ's in the country, and certainly one of the most influential) has been talking about gaming on air for a long time now, so yes, he has been gaming for years, and even offered his xbox and copy of cod4 as a prize on his tv show.

i also doubt that fearne plays a lot of games, alhough she is at least conscious of gaming, as she plays alongside willy holloughby in some of nintendo's gaming ads.

I can aprrectiate that Chris Moyles is both popular and influential, what I don't understand is why.

As for him being a gamer I wouldn't know, as you may have guessed I'm not the biggest fan of his show. Regardless he wasn't referenced in the article anyway, my mention of him was in answer to mattface's question above my comment.

its mostly because hes funny, he just has a bad reputation and tabloids like to take cheap shots at him.

regardless, i think it would be better if radio 1 gave this a higher profile by airing the results on one of the radio1 shows rather than a 1 extra show. because gaming is popular and becoming moreso all the time. i think they tried to incorporate a gaming part in edith bowemans show (which was too short and didnt cover much ground), it was never explained why but it got axed.

lol this is bad
i dont like it when tv and radio presenters have anything to do with games because they dont know what they are talking about lol theyll say something really stupid and therel be an awkward silence i bet on it
theyl say something like my favorite game is Call of war..... no wait call of duty.... shit and every1 will be like ?!?!?

To be honest they should probably have done something other than 'Best Game Ever'. Its been done to death by every game website out there, so the majority of gamers will already have seen any number of these things.

A feature exploring the medium as a hobby, an art form etc would have been better, even bringing up the positive finacial aspects, especially with the current economic situation. Gaming is finally shedding this nerdy stereotype and having a big poll on favourite games ever is only going to drag it back up.

I for one won't be listening as Radio 1 listeners vote Wii Sports as the best game of all time
jmohan  - 6 months 11 days ago
I don't think this is a good idea, and I've got a bad feeling it will be Wii Sports too.

I personally think Chris Moyles is brilliant.

wii sports couldnt win ,'The list of 100 games, 'chosen by a group of industry experts'

and jbo87, dont be ridiculous, radio 1 isnt a news programme doing features on gaming, if they were going to do anything on gaming it would either be in the form of a poll or as a general casual feature. not about something Pretentious like it being an art form.

Diabolical music, middle of the road presenters paid not to have real opinion or personality and a contrived "Big Weekend" consisting of, most likely, paid marketing for whichever companies have made deals. Sounds great to me...

I'd bet on the following taking place-
Two "uber fans" will duke it out over which is better; 360 or PS3.
Guitar Hero and Rock Band will be mentioned constantly because they're the easiest games to work into the whole being a music radio station scenario.
Pro Evolution versus Fifa debate.
Fern Cotton not mentioning her corporate shill status for Nintendo at all and saying she loves Rock Band and plays it ALL the time. She will do this unconvincingly, as is her style.

Perhaps the BBC would serve themselves and the underrepresented gamers of the UK better by making a TV show, what with gaming being a primarily visual medium, not filling it with BBC actors with new shows or other such Z-listers("Which member of the Eastenders cast is better at COD!" I can see it now), and not pissing away an undoubtedly substantial amount of money away on an easily forgotten weekend of half hearted presenters trying to sound excited about some 13 year old "gaming expert" explaining why the latest graphics are amazing.

Rant over. Itch scratched.

lol, i love the way you try and represent yourself as some kind of revolutionary despising the system. theyre paid to be on the radio because people enjoy listening to them.( diabolical music?,lol) and a 'contrived' big weekend? think before you say.

Im guessing youve never listened to radio 1, because its not in the setup of a news show doing different features, they'll talk about games in between playing music. so they wont be having 'debates' or feature 'uberfans'.

rock band or guitar hero probably will come up because they are popular and fun games, and its not about an 'easiest game to fit' because theyre devoting an entire weekend to gaming so they already have the context to talk about any game.

Ferne may talk about about nintendo because if she does play games, it probably would be on a more casual and accessible level, like guitar hero or rockband. and corporate shill status? she did an advert, OMTFC!

the bbc creates shows they think will be popular so that licence payers get their moneys worth, and frankly 'gamer shows' of the past havent done very well so they would be wasting an even greater amount of money on a show that frankly wouldnt do that well at this time.

Yay! Roll on either Guitar Hero or Halo, for the "hardcore" out there!!! YAY!!!

God, depressing. Has anyone SEEN Zac Efron try to look "hardcore gamer"? Seriously, Hannah Montana's parents are so redneck they would tie a PSP to some rocks and try to drown it.
