Assassin's Creed II

Also known as: Assassin's Creed 2

TGS 09: Why Assassin's Creed II is GTA, Hitman and Arkham Asylum in one stealthy package

Part Agent 47, part Dark Knight, all merciless murdering

The first Assassin’s Creed was an incredible sensory experience. So you’ll be glad to know the slack-jawed awe that comes with staring at massive cityscapes from a lofty tower is back with a vengeance. Better yet, from our hands-on with the upcoming Tokyo Game Show demo, it’s clear Ubisoft Montreal has really been working on the assassinations. And the murdering antics now rival Metal Gear and Hitman for thoughtful stealthy shenanigans.

The plot bit

Set in Renaissance era Italy, you control Ezio Auditore di Firenze (phew). Once a nobleman, he turns to professional people whacking in order to avenge the death of his dad. Exhausting names aside, the game still involves taking on hits from various guilds and whacking powerful figures. Combat and kills remain much the same. So you’ll still be offing people with concealed blades while looking all ‘emo’ in a brooding hood.

Plunging axes into guards’ feet – one of the most wince-inducing new moves – greedily claims its fair chunk of awesome. But it’s the much improved stealth that could well make this one of the games of 2009.

Like Agent 47, you can kill your targets without ever being seen

Despite awarding it a perfect ten, the hits in the first game could feel clumsy. Built up as elaborate set pieces, reaching your target usually ended in a clusterf*ck of stabbing everything in sight. Thankfully, Ezio has been taking tips from Hitman’s sociopathic slap head. And, just like nailing a silent assassin rating in Agent 47’s wet work ‘em up, murders can now be planned and executed with thoughtful precision.

We see this for ourselves in the demo, when we reach a heavily guarded church where our target Emilo Barbagio is hiding. Silently skulking from the courtyard’s rafters, we follow the evil doer and his bodyguard. Once isolated, we strike with a gruesome new move that sees us plunge twin blades into both men’s jugulars simultaneously. It’s brutal, clinical and, best of all, witness-free.

How come having a hood is an automatic Emo sticker slapped on your face? I wear hoods too, and I don't brood. Anyway, looks amazing, been looking forward since the first hints of it.

I think that the reason for the new found popularity of helmets, masks, hoods, and the like is because it is better for both sides: the developers don't have to spend as many resources on the character's face if they don't have to make any animations, and it is more understandable for sequels if the only similarities we see are things that hide the face, allowing for faces that don't look entirely similar or different.

@NelosAngelos - I totally agree, but he might be brooding 'cos his dad just got killed.

@94blazedriver - Impossible! You can't do that with the *shudders* unskippable cutscenes.
Speaking of wihich I would love to know what the deal is with that for this game.

i think assassin' creed is one of the best games ever made and i think AC2 will be epic but i think AC is not so original like they say....mmm let me clarify that for u
a hero that climbs walls & tall buildings and hids his true identity bring a bell? yup our own amazing spiderman & in AC2 ezio wears a cap and he has leonardo at his side inventing for him these cool gadgets he can use like morgan freeman in batman oops did i say BATMAN yup i think i did....and last and not least now he has 2 hidden blades in each hand that come out....come on guys that's easy...let it come to u yeahhhh finaly got it it is wolverine...i am not saying that ac is ripoff idea i jst think that altair or ezio are an assembly of characters and they r a gr8 assembly i might add :D

@ xboxrulez

Dude, there's no way a console could ever, EVER beat a PC with graphics or ANYTHING for that matter. PC hardware, software, and technology in general advances WAY too quick for consoles to compare. Does your 360 have a terabyte HD? Does it have 4 gb of ram? Does it have a 1GB video card? Does it have a quad-core processor? No, no, no, and NO, it doesn't. I realize that devs don't max out their games full potential on PC cuz not everyone has the newest and greatest components, but PC will always own consoles, period!

Man this game is going to be efing sweet. I loved the first one and this one is going 2 own! also @ Xboxrulez I doubt that the 360 is going to have any more maps than the PS3. In fact I think that the only extra map are if you preorder. @ gamestop you get one extra map with pre-ordering the regular game and 2 if you pre-order the deluxe edition. Any way sweet game and thanx GR for keepin us in the loop.

I so want Assassins Creed 2. Hopefully there is no retard on rails moment when you control a Leonardo Da Vinci wooden mech suit.

27 hours of game well damn that's awesome. But there is one huge issue, receptivity does anyone really want to do the same thing over and over for 27 hours? First game was awesome till the final boss with the random magic orb. Seriously.
xboxrulez  - 2 months 8 days ago
well, may xbox has a huge 20gig HD, which is more than most pc's and all ps3s.

the man in the shop (where may first get the greet and amazing xbox - so amazinf!) said it had the most powerful graphics card availible.
x
another /win for xbox. case closed.

@mentalityljs

My PC doesn't have many of those features. While my comp isn't set up to run games or anything, the average person doesn't have a crazy gaming rig either. Meanwhile, my PS3 or 360 are hooked up to a big, hi-def tv.

I'm not trying to start some stupid argument over PC vs console, but I just mean to point out that not everyone has some badass gaming rig at their disposal.
