The NPD Group has released the latest 360 software sales figures for the U.S.A., and there are a couple of surprises in there. While no one's going to be confused by a top three consisting of GTAIV, Call of Duty IV and Madden, the games in fourth and fifth place are Ubisoft's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Army of Two, respectively. If nothing else this comprehensively proves that Americans really, really like guns.

But it also proves that in the face of being the only new franchise in the top five and receiving merely good-to-average review scores, Army of Two still went on to sell some 900,000 copies in the US. Our guess is that to some the lure of co-op is so strong it makes the game itself seem like virtual wrapping paper. Brr.

Electronic Arts always seem to get the sh!t@y end of the stick when being discussed in the gaming community. Not least because of their aggressive buyout of top developers such as Pandemic, Bullfrog and such like, but also the tendency for them to invest huge amounts of money in acquiring licenses only to produce a bunch of shovelware that sits atop the festive gaming charts year in year out.

As if that wasn't bad enough - EA are now beginning to attempt to 'strangle' the second hand games market.
To protect his scar-ridden face, he dons a nondescript, yet sleek helmet, thereby rendering him mute and indistinguishable from everything else on sale. Give up?

The achievements are only available to unlock in a brand new SSC Challenge Mode which comes in the form of a new downloadable content pack. From Official EA Games website:

"Army of Two is bringing you all new content with the brand new SSC Challenge Mode available for download on Xbox LIVE Marketplace and the Sony PLAYSTATION STORE on April 24! The SSC Challenge Mode Pack is comprised of four new two-player co-op maps where gamers will compete in the SSC Challenge versus mode for the chance to earn big cash rewards. Each team must work co-operatively and compete in a race through grueling obstacle courses as they test skills in accuracy, two-man tactics and highly lethal combat. This whole new multiplayer mode will give you the chance to test your skills in a brand new setting while still delivering the action packed co-op intensity that you can expect from Army of Two.

The new maps will be available on April 24 in North America and Europe on Xbox LIVE Marketplace. The download pack will also come to the PLAYSTATION Store on April 24 in North America and May 2008 in Europe."

The full achievement list for Army of Two can be found here. The download content is expected to be priced at 600 Microsoft Points. Will you be downloading the new content?

Jesse Divnich, newly-installed director of Analytical Services at EEDAR, believes that there should be little disruption to overall sales of Grand Theft Auto IV, even though demand for Wii Fit - released in the UK just days earlier than Rockstar's title - appears to be extremely high.

However, he did admit that there may be an initial hit, based on some crossover, although if so, it wouldn't last too long.

PlayStation 3 outsold Xbox 360 for the third month in a row, but the Nintendo Wii overshot the combined sales of its rivals, according to Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter.

Ahead of March's NPD Group sales data, due to release this Thursday, Pachter forecast PS3 sales of 365,000 units, edging out sales of 310,000 for Xbox 360.

In a Monday investor note, Pachter predicted that Nintendo will come out on top for yet another month, with Wii sales of 700,000 during March's five-week retail period.

Army of Two Assistant Producer, Matt Turner has revealed on his upcoming blog, details about an Army of Two demo and new downloadable content:

"So guess what people. The demo is coming. Oh Yeah. Sha-bam. Looks like it will be going live April 1st. So for those of you that have yet to give our game a whirl you can download it off Xbox live and take it for a test run. It's the training and first map of the game so it gets you familiar with the systems and then lets you get a taste of the combat. We figured that now is as good a time as any to get it out there. It will be free, of course, and waiting to entice you like a piece of raw meet dangling over an alligator pond¿jumping, snapping, being generally menacing until you grab it and take it deep under water for a good ol' fashion death roll¿ animals! Again! I always get on nature tangents¿it's kind of a thing these days I suppose.

Moving on. So there is 1 new multiplayer map arriving as well as 2 new campaign maps in the not too distant future. As well as SSC Challenge- that's the obstacle course for mercs that I mentioned in my previous post. So that being said there is some good stuff to look forward to in the future for AO2."

Details of an upcoming patch were also revealed. The problems that patch will fix include:

* Problems connecting to EA servers

* Getting Disconnected from Multiplayer matches

* PS3 Headset issues

* Region Lock

Democrat and Chronicle reports:

"Salem and Rios started their careers as U.S. Rangers. But they got talked into working for a corporation as mercenaries, doing contract-killing for the "U.S. Administration." Unlike government soldiers, their post-9/11 battles are bloody lucrative.

And so, video games - from BlackSite: Area 51 to Tom Clancy titles - continue to make political statements. Army of Two is the latest, not the greatest, battlefield outing to chime in on how America conducts itself militarily."
While some have deemed it to be too 'pro-American,' it was developed in EA's Montreal studio. Alain Tascan, the general manager, said: "In Europe for instance, certain places feel the game is very pro-American. But the thing I want to tell them is, 'Do you know it's being done by French Canadians?'"
The European manual mentions that the game is not cross region compatible, which EA confirmed today. Since Army of Two uses peer-to-peer and no server connectivity, that choice was made to maintain perfect synchronization in the animations and prevent a bad co-op experience.

A report on Area Games, translated by Kotaku, says EA's Army of Two has been refused classification by the German ratings body USK.

When contacted by Next-Gen EA confirmed that "Army of Two is currently unrated in Germany". The publisher refused to be drawn on whether it plans to submit a toned down version of the title to the USK for classification, but added that it is "in discussions with the ratings body to review next steps for its release".
Pick up tomorrow's new issue of PSM3, and you'll be able to read the world's first magazine review of Army of Two, Electronic Arts' co-op focused shooter. But thanks to the game being recently delayed, you won't actually be able to buy it until some unconfirmed date next year. So what's the deal?

Well, if you head on over to PSM3's official blog, they take the effort to talk us through the problems. The answer's not so simple. For instance, developers are having problems with PS3 ...
EAs military shooter Army of Two, soon to be blasting its way onto PS3 and 360, adds a refreshing twist on the standard single player shooter by introducing co-op play throughout the entire game.

The latest trailer explains the aggro system, which shows how enemies will react to each player depending on their position and ultimately, who has the bigger gun. The more heat you attract from the enemy the higher your aggro meter will be, allowing your partner to flank the enemy ...
The latest trailer of EAs military shooter Army of Two, which will be released for PS3 and 360 on 16 November, opens with footage taken from the 9/11 terror attack, showing smoke bellowing from one of the World Trade Centre towers.

A 2006 press release stated that Army of Two “will throw gamers into hot spots ripped from current day headlines” and having the opening cinematic begin with the events of 9/11, it certainly seems intent on living up to that ...
Sept 07 2007

Army of Two has taken the stance of being a co-op experience rather than a flat shooter with co-op tacked on - but these new screens show it still knows how to dole out the pain. And by the looks of this bumper load of violence, the twosome are pretty capable with their bare hands as well. In fact, wearing masks adorned in skulls and flames, our money is that they'd make pretty awesome ...

Asked when we might see one, he told Eurogamer: "Not prior to release. I don't know if there'll be something later, but the thing is given our release date [15th November for PS3 and Xbox 360 in the US and Europe] and where we're at, we'd rather focus on this rather than taking engineers off and having them do a demo."
The first game isn't even out yet and already EA isn't shy about discussing the future of the Army of Two franchise.

At EA's mammoth HQ earlier this week, Lead Designer Chris Ferriera told us that he wants to get the development of Army of Two just right, so that the chance of pumping out sequels in the future is a possibility.

"To think of this game as a new IP within EA, it has to be right," he said. "We want the first game to be perfect, because if we launch an IP and it isn't what we want ...
EA sends word that its co-op shooter Army of Two will release on November 15 for Xbox 360 and PS3.

The publisher has made bold promises where Army of Two is concerned, such as how the game will "redefine the co-op action/shooter genre".

Gameplay revolves around cooperation between the two protagonists, who are plunged into various hot spots and have to work together to achieve objectives. Naturally you can play it with a pal or AI, or seamlessly interchange between the two.

We're not sure ...
Forget about co-op play meaning a simple retread of the single-player experience with a few more enemies. No, Army of Two is the real deal. A game fully focused on the two-player mechanic, to the point where solo play takes a bit-part role.

MMOs have been using an aggro system for ages, but its use here in a shooter is quite new. The 'aggrometer' - a gauge that swings between players as they provoke enemies - gives new possibilities for tactical play as one player works to ...
The PAI will also react and adjust to the gamer's ability and how they play the game by taking the lead or following, driving strategy or taking orders. It is the dream of the human machine.

Given publisher EA's reputation for producing relatively innocuous games with mass-market appeal, it's weird to see them tackle something as overtly political as Army of Two. Part ultraviolent shooter, part troubling polemic on the US military's increasing reliance on mercenaries - sorry, "private military companies" - Army of Two envisions a near future in which powerful PMCs scheme to keep the world in a state of constant (and extremely profitable) war. And you're working for them.

Now, we're all up for lightening the serious business of contract killing with a few giggles, but this latest movie of PS3 and Xbox 360 synergistic shooter, Army of Two, makes the game look like a slapstick pantomime performed by out of work wrestlers and scripted by graduates from the Arnold Schwarzenegger School of Comedy. But hey, everyone's funny bone is a different density, so maybe it'll tickle yours - check the footage below and laugh it up.

Alain Tascan of EA Montreal wasnt too impressed with Epics high-octane, high-scorer Gears of War - the Vice President of the company that brings us yearly sports and Harry Potter updates felt that the vicious antics of Fenix and co. lacked innovation. Crazy words indeed, but at least he had the decency to admit that if Army of Two fails to dazzle, he will be guzzling Milk of Magnesia in an attempt to digest those words.

But with each passing new scrap of info on this wise-cracking, ...
These claims come on the revelation that development of Army of Two on the Xbox 360 manages to yield a maximum of 60fps while the PS3 version struggles to reach 30fps currently. Army of Two is expected to hit retail shelves during November.
If you're none the wiser don't let the masks mislead you - this is neither a wrestling game nor a gimp simulator, but a high-action co-op shooter with some particularly impressive set-pieces including a mission which concludes with you running up the side of the a massive, sinking aircraft carrier, dodging jets sliding off the ...
The contest, which is being hosted at the game's Web site runs until June 15.

The two gamers-turned-designers whose weapon design is selected will have their weapons included as a special unlockable pre-order item in the Xbox 360 version of the game.

Quote:
"The problem isn't that Army of Two seems to have taken a more humorous turn than we originally anticipated. The problem is that it's not especially funny. It's juvenile, and generically so, as if cynically cobbled together from the collective unconscious of a focus group of 12-year-old boys".

Today Electronic Arts announced that the next-gen game Army of Two, that will be released on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, has been delayed.

The reason is unknown, but the game will now hit the stores somewhere in the financial year of 2008. A release in 2007 is still likely though, since the financial year starts at the 1st of April 2007.

As part of its earnings announcement today, megapublisher Electronic Arts revealed the release window of two of its highest-profile games. Crysis, Crytek's hotly anticipated PC shooter, and Army of Two, the co-op actioner for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, will now both arrive after the end of EA's current fiscal year, which ends on March 31, 2007.

"We have made some adjustments to our SKU plan that will move a couple of titles into fiscal 2008, specifically Army of Two and Crisis," EA chief financial officer Warren Jenson told analysts during a postearnings conference call.

During the same call, Jenson also confirmed that several sequels to EA's most important franchises are in the works. "Yes, there's a Sims 3 in development and it's likely to be a fiscal '09 title," said Jenson, meaning the game would hit stores before April 2009. The executive also confirmed that the Sims franchises will also be coming to two next-generation platforms--the Wii and the PlayStation 3.
Set in the Middle East a year in the future, Army of Two sees Americas heavy military losses force a situation where corporate armies send mercenaries to the frontlines. You could call it terrifyingly prophetic, but after our behind closed doors sneak peek wed prefer to call it a stonkingly exciting, visually superb action blast.

In the demo, one of EA's pad-men led us through a level, using a wireless 360 headset to issue voice-activated controls. For all intents and purposes, the demo was presented as real-time gameplay, with our guide actually ...
