Whether they're too ambitious, too expensive or simply too good to be true, we're frequently led to imagine great things only to have our expectations dashed when the game finally arrives. How could these games be so good on paper yet underwhelm so spectacularly?

What makes a good video game? Strong visuals are important. Good controls are essential. A well-crafted concept helps too. These days, most games can boast at least two-thirds of that criteria.

So, then what makes a game great? Feeling. Emotion. Surprise. Interaction. Even addiction. It's a magical feeling when a game offers all these elements.

Here are the titles L.A. Times deemed the best experiences of 2007. Admittedly, they didn't play everything (because that would probably be impossible), but of the titles that did cross their paths, these are the ones that resonated most. Their favorites in order:

Best of the Year:
¿ BioShock
¿ Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
¿ Assassin's Creed
¿ Super Mario Galaxy
¿ The Orange Box

Honorable Mention:
¿ Halo 3
¿ Rock Band
¿ Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
¿ Cooking Mama: Cook Off
¿ Lost Planet

Worst of the Year:
¿ Lair

Dishonorable Mention:
¿ Fusion Frenzy 2
¿ 300: March to Glory
¿ Tenchu Z

The latest data from Media Create shows that weekly Xbox 360 sales rose from 3,718 to 17,673, while PS3 sales fell slightly to 17,434. The rise in 360 sales is most likely attributable to the successful release of Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation, which sold almost 80,000 copies in its first week on sale to enter the Japanese software chart at No2.

According to Japanese blogger 'Sinobi', which regularly updates with early sales figures, Koei's Wii-exclusive RPG 'Opoona' - which has been getting positive previews and good magazine coverage - has sold only 2,500 copies on its first day with 3.7 million Wii's in Japan. Ace Combat 6, with fewer than 500,000 Xbox 360 in Japan, has passed 35,000 units.

Super Mario Galaxy has sold... only 130,000 units on its first day. Cubed³ provides comparative sale data to show why a lot of forum-dwellers appear to be shocked by that number.
Take everything we just mentioned - the planes, the intensity and the terrain - and ...
Oct 4, 2007

Along with a whale's buttload of gorgeous new screens for Ace Combat 6, Namco Bandai has released some tidbits of info on new tactics available for couch-mounted wannabe pilots. From the press release:

Read-Ahead Fire: Normal missile fire is done by locking on to nearby enemies and launching missiles that pursue their target. While this approach of air-to-air combat is suitable for eliminating most enemies, it requires the player to spend valuable time getting closer to their ...

According to an interview at the French website Jeux Video, (see the first alternative source below,) the producer of Ace Combat 6 has revealed the possibility of a PS3 version of the air simulation game.

In addition, earlier the official site for Beautiful Katamari listed PlayStation 3 and Wii versions as "TBD" ("To Be Determined,") The website has since then been updated, and the PS3 and Wii listing removed after being spotted and reported.

In a similar fashion, Eternal Sonata (aka Trusty Bell in Japan) is also listed as "TBD" for PlayStation 3 -- but interestingly, no Wii. The unintentional listing has also been discovered and removed.

Altogether which seem to be an interesting coincidence. 1UP speculates that Beautiful Katamari and Eternal Sonata will be announced at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show (TGS) 2007, (i.e., the second alternative source below.)

Note: Snapshots of the evidences were taken by Kotaku before the websites changes and are attached below.
Plenty's already been said about Ace Combat 6 and Beautiful Katamari, but until this week no one had seen a drop of full-on multiplayer action. Both games promised the feature, and had been explained through text, but now we've finally spent some quality time with two of Namco's biggest hitters. Oh, and we dabbled with Tekken 5's new online mode on the PlayStation Network, but more on that later.

Being the insatiable Ace fans that we are, Fires of Liberation was our first stop. ...
Chances are you've already settled into the cockpit and taken the game for a test flight thanks to a demo that's available on Xbox Live.

If not, it's a graphically impressive flight combat sim, featuring numerous aircraft and six conflicts to tie up your trigger finger.

By the time you read this, Microsoft's big pre-E3 media spiel will be over. One of the highlights of said speech, we're told, will be a huge chunk of in-game action from Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation. Assuming you weren't there (considering the state of this year's E3, you weren't), there's no way to glimpse the smoke-choked footage save for some blogger's grainy shaky-cam. Or, you could watch it here first, a good 12 hours before anyone else has it.

Despite the early success of Fight Night Round 3 with Live Marketplace, developers still hadn't been fully sold on the whole downloadable demo idea last E3. Not the case this year, the Hedgehog's got ears on a massive list of demos that'll be landing on Live next week. Fore sure are Ace Combat 6, Blue Dragon, and Mercenaries 2, quite possible are Devil May Cry 4, Tom Clancy's Endwar, and Halo 3 single player demo!!!

Also expect a massive bevy of new games for the Wii to appear at the show; including new ones from Sega, Capcom, and Konami. I guess having no obvious competition in Japan has those developers hifting priorities. Oh dear oh dear, poor Sony! They need big franchises like MGS and FF to hit the PS3 so people will buy them.

Problem is a new rumor states that Square-Enix is actually holding back FFXII until the PS3's install base reaches a more profitable level, classic Catch 22! Finally Ubisoft will be showing off a new Prince of Persia title in limited form next week. Expect to be mesmerized all over again!

If you took a quick poll of IGNs most anticipated 360 titles right now in the IGN AU office, we're pretty sure Eternal Sonata and Ace Combat 6 might crack the list somewhere. The two games couldn't be more different, but both have their charms. For instance, Eternal Sonata is going to add some RPG credibility to the Xbox 360, while Ace Combat is compatible with a downright sick-looking flight stick and throttle combo. Nice.

Both games are due for release this coming Spring in Australia and New Zealand, according to Atari Australia.
Our latest hands-on revealed very little in the way of new info or features that we haven't already discussed, but it did run much, much smoother than before. In ...
It's almost been two weeks since we broke the news that longtime Sony-exclusive Ace Combat had bailed and taken refuge on Xbox 360.
After spending the better part of a week describing bits of what makes Ace Combat 6 such an exciting prospect, we feel it's time to share our initial impressions of the almost-complete version Namco provided. This build was about 60% done and needed a little tweaking in the sound and framerate departments, but we're confident the Ace team will have these issues tucked away before the game ships - no other game in the series has gone to stores chuggy or choppy, so we don't expect that to start ...
Air Combat (PlayStation - 1995)
You are the team leader of an elite corps of mercenaries - fighter pilots hired to strike where NATO air forces have failed.

It's the summer of 1995. The whole world is eyeballing Sony's PlayStation, a machine that's supposed to somehow topple videogame giants Sega and Nintendo. While Sega digs its own grave with a rocket-powered backhoe, Nintendo sticks to its guns in all the wrong ways, leaving Sony with a free, open road to success. Part of that initial ...
You may have noticed that day four of our Ace Combat 6 coverage is a retrospective on the whole series. Seems like the right thing to do, see where the franchise has been, where it's going and what it's brought to the gaming masses over the years, But what do the actual developers think about the series? It's obvious they have a love for jets, missiles and fan service, but are there any ambitions left unfulfilled or projects that didn't quite pan out as planned? To get this point of view, we ...
But this has been the case since the series' debut more than a decade ago. What's new for the 360 version? A whole hell of a lot, ...
Yesterday the series of tubes that is the internets was abuzz with news that Ace Combat 6 would be appearing on 360. Today we can confirm that news, and the US release is currently slated for some time this fall (we'll bet it's the holiday, what do you think?). More important than that old news, however, are the first screens of the game in action, available up there on the Images tab.
