Legion, the X-Men spinoff show currently in development for FX, has found its mutants. Marvel announced today that Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey), Aubrey Plaza (Parks & Recreation), and Jean Smart (Fargo) have all been signed and given their roles.
Stevens will play David Haller, Charles Xavier's estranged son and (at least in the comics) a powerful telepath. Smart will play a therapist "with a sharp mind and unconventional methods," as the press release describes her. But really, my personal favorite is the casting of Plaza as Lenny, an "impossible optimist" that keeps her chin up despite a life of drugs and alcohol abuse.
Plaza is known for playing grumpy, rude, or stand-offish characters, such as April Ludgate from Parks & Recreation and Eska from The Legend of Korra. Heck, she even played the voice of Internet sensation Grumpy Cat in the TV movie Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever. Watching her play someone who sees the glass as half full is gonna be fun change.
Starring Dan Stevens, Aubrey Plaza, Jean Smart, and Rachel Keller and executive produced by Bryan Singer and Noah Hawley, Legion is set to begin production in March, with no specific premiere date yet announced.
