Wii U weaker than PS3 and Xbox 360, will be the ultimate MMO console [Rumor]

Nintendo's Wii U received a pair of mixed reviews this week, with one developer claiming the system won't be able to hold its own next to current gen competition, and another praising Nintendo's tablet controller as the next best thing for console MMOs.

The first insight comes from an unnamed source at GamesIndustry.biz, who said Nintendo's next lacks the muscle to compete with the current crop of consoles, noting, “No, it's not up to the same level as the PS3 or the 360...There aren't as many shaders, it's not as capable. Sure, some things are better, mostly as a result of it being a more modern design. But overall the Wii U just can't quite keep up."

This latest rumor contradicts an earlier anonymous report from January which stated the Wii U would be twice as powerful as the Xbox 360. However, that insider also admitted developers are somewhat discouraged by the system's specs, saying, “I've heard [a project designer] complain it's underpowered compared to what Nintendo announced, resulting in people having to de-scale their plans.”

On a brighter note, Funcom developer Joel Bylos is one un-unnamed source who is speaking positively about Wii U's ability; specifically its ability to handle MMORPGs.

“Wii U could be the first real console on which running an MMORPG without compromise is plausible,” said Bylos, in an interview with the official Nintendo magazine (via My Nintendo News). “The controller is perfect for lining up those rows of hotbars that are essential in most MMOs. A customisable touchscreen interface combined with the 3D spatial movement of a console controller could be a winner.”

It could. But then, going back to the first source, the Wii U will reportedly limit players to one tablet per console. Also, by the time Nintendo launches its next-gen hardware, the source suggested Sony will have already beaten it to the punch with its own PS3/ PS Vita cross-compatibility set-up, adding, “You can do everything with that combo that you can with the Wii U, and more.”

With new rumor mill in full operation, it's important to take every “anonymous source” with a grain of salt; especially if said sources are confident enough to make bold opinions, but forget to leave their names. On the flip-side, the fact Nintendo has shied away from addressing the Wii U's full capabilities in public isn't helping its case. Not that the company owes the community any details before it's ready, but if it can put naysayers in their place, now seems like a good time to start letting things slip.

What a bummer! Doesn't Nintendo know that they will lose out if they don't release a more powerful console than 6 year old technology? For shame Nintendo!

Agreed, Nintendo needs to post just something to put all rumors to sleep or something to get ready for E3, too many random rumors popping up not just for Wii U but for Sony and Microsoft aswell thats either random praise or random criticism, and some that are just plain random. The soon the REAL info gets out the better.

I'm just waiting for official news from Nintendo at E3.

Well, I think it would be ridiculous if this was true. The tech behind 360 and PS3 isn't cheap, but I'd have to think that Nintendo could still manufacture something of comparable power and still turn a profit. Also, I don't think Nintendo's market (casual OR core) want to play MMOs, so while that option may be valid for the devs, they should also think about their market.

Actually the stuff inside the 360 is pretty cheap (not sure about the PS3) now and days. You have to remember that stuff is 6 years old and tech moves extremely fast. What's cutting edge for one month is dethroned the next. So I would be pretty shocked if any of that stuff is still all that expensive, hell even Blu-rays are about 100 bucks now on the low end. That's one thing people seem to forget, it's taken developers 6 years to actually get the graphics looking as good as they do, then nintendo's console can do those same graphics before it's even released? That's pretty amazing.

I believe it only when I see it myself - furthermore I can hardly imagine that the WiiU will be "weaker" than a current gen console, that just sounds wrong.

    But will it blend...?

I dont really care, just give me Nintendo games in glorious HD.
  • cokelogic - April 3, 2012 10:16 a.m.

Slow down. Nintendo games in HD, not glorious HD. Didn't you read the article? They're putting all their money into the gimmicky controller instead of the console itself.

I like Nintendo's 1 yeat plan. Compete with Mario Kart U and a few ports; then become a full generation behind with the launch of the next console cycle (don't kid yourself, it's happening in 2013). Doomed to fail.

yes, nintendo is a relic of the 90's and their tech is always obsolete. THIS ISN'T NEWS, STOP REPORTING IT AS SUCH.

If you are a human you shit, so are you gay?

Nintendo can't into internet and their console will be an MMO platform? I don't think so.
  • KnowYourPokemon - April 3, 2012 1:03 p.m.

The WiiU is going to have online connection... this has been known for a long time now.

I love all these rumors! They are much better than hearing about any actual news, because surely the anonymous sources from the industry are reliable and not just making things up. /sarcasm In all seriousness though, whats the point of reporting on a rumor? Why not wait until things are actually confirmed so you don't have to put that annoying [RUMOR] tag at the end of articles and so people don't get all upset over things which are most likely not going to happen?

I can pass on this. I think he tablet is a cool idea, but it looks clunky to hold and possible heavy over a long amount of gaming time. Alas, I'll stick to my Xbox and PC. If they get some stellar first-party HD-next-gen games (METROID PRIME, PLEASE?!), I'll consider it.
  • elsnichkum - April 3, 2012 11:05 a.m.

Still waiting for the ULTRA Nintendo. A Nintendo console that will focus solely on 1st party games gamers want. God, there were so many great games on the SUPER Nintendo.
  • Moondoggie1157 - April 3, 2012 11:15 a.m.

If Nintendo were to release such a console, I'd happily buy it... I miss the days of Sega and Nintendo feuding, twas a simpler time.
  • ncurry2 - April 3, 2012 11:36 a.m.

I'm calling BS on this one. Every single other report has claimed that is more powerful than the PS3. One random report saying otherwise won't sway me. It won't matter come E3 of course but there's no way Nintendo would release a system less powerful than current gen. No way.
