Wii U release date won't be revealed at E3, retail games will be downloadable on Wii U and 3DS

Nintendo just released their financial report for the period, and aside from boring facts about sales or profits, something that's actually of interest to gamers was found inside. A lot of somethings in fact. They not only revealed new plans for software distribution, but also gave us hints about what will be shown at E3, and what won't be, including the Wii U's release date.

First off, though Nintendo still maintains that the Wii U will be out worldwide before the end of the year and that its "final format" will be at E3, but Nintendo isn't revealing everything at June's trade show. The publisher says they will reveal price and release schedule at a later date, similar to what the company did with the 3DS last year. If we took bets, we'd say Wii U will be out in a 2012 month that ends in "er."

But wait! There's more, and it's actually a much bigger shock. Starting in August with New Super Mario Bros 2 on 3DS, Nintendo will begin offering retail releases as digital downloads simultaneously. And from the sound of it, these same-day-as-retail downloads will continue at least for Nintendo's titles, though there was no mention of third party releases getting the same treatment.

This particularly progressive bombshell of Nintendo's was followed by confirming that same day digital practise will also happen on the Wii U, starting at launch (whenever that is). Though this isn't revolutionary for the game industry at large, as similar digital plans have been on the Vita since before February, this is still a huge step forward for Nintendo, a company not known for cutting-edge internet plans. This, mixed with their recent approach to DLC, bodes well for whatever online plans the publisher may have for the Wii U. Stay tuned...

Just give me the specs already.

...Yeah, I'd bet money on an "er" ending month as well. Jokes aside, just like with the 3DS, the Wii U is a Day 1 purchase for me. Hard to believe that E3 is only over a month away.

Silly Hank. Don't you know this is supposed to be three seperate articles.

I got too lazy to milk this info properly

It's great to see them realizing what the internet is and all but I'll be the first to admit I'm quite disappointed that we won't know the release date or pricing after E3. Those are some pretty important facts. Plus, I was always kind of hoping they'd surprise everyone and come out way early.

"First off, though Nintendo still maintains that the Wii U will be out worldwide before the end of the year and that its "final format" will be at E3, but Nintendo is keeping some things a secret even after June's trade show." Ouch. That sentence needs some work.

Also, i wanted a Nintendo related article to say something. Please bare with me cause i have a theory that can be on to something. Something's very off, Were expecting a 2D Mario for 3DS, and a Mario game for the Wii U, its been made clear the 2D Mario is New Super Mario Bros. 2, and there are words that the Wii U game is a "Similar experience to the mario experience at E3" which was basically New Super Mario bros. Wii U. That not only sounds odd but crappy, despite that we will never know till E3. However something of an idea came to play after thinking it through. Backtrack a bit and you'll recall that Smash Bros. would be for both the Wii U and 3DS, and while browsing other sites, ive seen an article about Sakurai wanting to make one of the main concepts of the new smash to be the connectivity between the Console and Handheld. This is a bit of a stretch, but WHAT IF, that the 2 New Super Mario bros. for 3DS and Wii U are supposedly the first conncectivity games? It would make sense, there are literally 2 New Super Mario bros. coming from the info we have so far, and it would make complete sense if it's major concept is the connectivity. I can be completely wrong here and my theory out the garbade but it is something to keep note of, once again, the answers are at E3.

That would actually be pretty awesome. Playing Smash on Wii U and knowing that any one of the people I'm playing with could be playing on a 3DS? That kind of connectivity is unprecedented. I don't even think SONY has that planned for VITA and PS3 (although I welcome the opportunity to be wrong on that one). Let's just hope Nintendo are on the same wavelength.

Sony has a connectivity to transfer what your doing on PS3 games on PS Vita if their the same game, but apparently Sakurai really wants to innovate with the concept and make it deeper than that, Its a stretch, but you know Sakurai, he does crazy things that work and with the Wii U's potential he can do anything.

I think for Wipeout 2048, PS Vita players can play certain tracks with Playstation 3 players that have Wipeout HD Fury. I don't think it's as involved as what shawksta is talking about though.

Yeah heard all the news. Coming from Nintendo, Same day digital distribution is a random advancement you wouldnt expect, i mean, its NINTENDO, downloading full games from the Eshop and Wii U future shop? DAMN!. Nintendo's starting to step it up, awesome. Their losses are making them stronger. They still need to becareful with the Wii U though, not revealing the Release date probably means they dont want to rush till the Wii U's finally ready, which is good, because we can all agree the 3DS's Launch was horrible

I meant to say "downloading full games from the Eshop and Wii U future shop on day one?"
