Wii U firmware update – reports suggest it can be downloaded in background

Reports from early Wii U adopters suggest the system’s sizeable firmware update can actually be downloaded in the background, making the process much more painless.

Apparently users who select ‘cancel’ when asked if they want to update the system firmware have found the update has downloaded in the background. Once downloaded, users are simply prompted to install the update, which itself is a quick process.

These reports are currently unconfirmed, but we’ve contacted Nintendo for verification and will update the story as soon as we hear anything.

Thats similar to how updates and downloads work on the 3DS. Theres an option to download later which just means it'll download it when the system is on standby.

that's great you can download it in the background, but why couldn't there be a option that says "download in background" instead of "cancel" in the first place???

This story seems to be true actually, I have seen it on a couple of message board forums and if true, they really should have made this more apparent. Still can't wait for my WiiU to get here.
