Greg Barker's doc hears the voices standing up for their beliefs

The Arab Spring remains a potent topic for debate in this documentary portrait of those behind the uprisings. Largely avoiding detailed political analysis, Greg Barker emphasises the human cost as key protestors in Libya, Syria and Bahrain ponder more timeless questions, notably the relative merits of armed struggle versus peaceful protest.

Barker’s approach starts simplistic but gathers in complexity, insight and moral force with each story. Destabilised by militants and betrayed by Western double-standards, success is uncertain – which makes the activists’ bravery resonate louder.
