Walking Dead game won't follow the comic's story

Shares

The first details of story in The Walking Dead game were revealed in an interview Joystiq did with Telltale game designer Jake Rodkin. Rather than follow the original characters created by Robert Kirkman, the game will follow a pair of new ones: Lee, a convict being driven to prison as the game begins, and Clementine, a young girl Lee meets while seeking refuge from the zombie crisis.

Fans of the graphic novel's story shouldn't despair entirely, Rodkin did say that familiar characters like Rick Grimes and the rest of the comic's cast of survivors will “cross paths” with Lee, but as the story progresses there will be fewer encounters with the original characters as the game narrows its focus on Lee and Clementine's story.

It doesn't come as much of a surprise that Telltale has chosen to create a new story, since the AMC show of the same name that thrust The Walking Dead into the mainstream media's spotlight also chose to diverge from the comic, but then again, with a story as violent and well-crafted as The Walking Dead, it also seems like a waste to not use it.

So far there’s no release date for The Walking Dead.

I hate the Walking Dead TV series. Yes, I said it. But I am not ashamed, it's 6 hour long episodes of people cyring! I'm sure the comics are way better, but come on! Someone slash a zombie! Oh wait, you want to go to a safe zone, ok then let's wait an hour to sort out all of our problems. I hope that if zombies do invade, it really isn't nothing like this. It's too slow.

The game much like the television series will not follow the comics? FAIL. Then why the fuck call it "Walking dead"? Seriously just drop the license and continue developing another shitty zombie game. You know what makes Walking Dead good? FUCKING WALKING DEAD. The first television episode was spot on in terms of the comic, then they deviated from the comic completely and the show went to complete shit. Walking FAIL.

I hope it's better than the TV series. The comics were/still are awesome and the show just totally shat all over the characters. Fair enough if they don't follow the comic story exactly but at least keep the character traits the same. By the end of the first series I was fed up trying to justify it to my friends. "It's going to get better, honest! The comics improve every time!" Anyway I'm glad the game is taking a totally new approach. It'd be cool to have a run-in with The Governor as well as Rick.

this looks sick. love the comics and show, glad they're not just following the story. although i have always wanted to see a bethesda-developed zombie game in the vein of fallout, albeit more dangerous. running around a modern open world, scrounging for weapons and ammo, finding other survivors, etc. sounds like an awesome idea. maybe running on the skyrim engine. a guy can dream, right?

Paul Ryan back in the mix!

It would be really cool if Lee was from the prison Rick lived in and he sort of worked his way backwards through the normal Walking Dead story and end at the hospital where Rick woke up

Sounds interesting, Lee being a convict. Makes me think about the Prisoner from Black Isle canceled Fallout 3 (aka van buren)

I thought this had already been covered....? Ah well, I love The Walking Dead TV series, and a game should be great. I just hope the story isn't TOO different, otherwise it wont feel like the same franchise, but just something with the name tacked on :/

Im reading the comics now and this does make me wonder what will make this a 'walking dead' game and not just a zombie one, Im expecting a bit more than a few cameos from the original characters..on the plus side at least there is no way they could mess up the reputation of the source material...like watchmen and the film adaption of that....

Yes there will be a second season. It starts in October!!!! 13 episodes. The comics are great, you could get them off amazon. That's where I got them about 8-9 bucks. Worth the read. I hope the game is good but it's not one I'll pick up right away.

What's this game going to be like? It sounds to me more like an action RPG than something like Left 4 Dead. Is there going to be a second season of the Walking Dead? My friends and I loved it, but there were only six episodes. I really want to read the comics, but being in a rural area, I've never even been in a comic store.
