Walking Dead "action FPS" announced by Activision

Activision announced today that they are currently producing a new action shooter based on the AMC Walking Dead television series. The game is in development at Terminal Reality, and is due out in 2013 on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.

The title will focus on the Dixon brothers, Merle and Daryl, and appears to be a prequel to the series. Players will control Daryl in what seems to be something of a survival horror title. “No place is truly safe for Daryl as he makes his way through the Georgia countryside in this new, post-apocalyptic world,” said Activision.

They also said that supplies will be scarce, and other characters from the series will be encountered who may be able to tag along. IGN has a brief teaser trailer.

Terminal Reality has a bit of an unpredictable history lately, developing Kinect Star Wars and Ghostbusters: The Video Game as well as many other lesser known titles.

... So nobody actually played the Ghostbuster video game for PS3 or 360, then? That game was fantastic, with a couple of moments that were genuinely unnerving. Moreso than anything I'd encountered in Resi 5, when you're in the library and you're walking down a small hallway and hear children laughing behind you, and you turn around and books are stacked in rows to the ceiling? That game was a genuinely fun experience, and the voice acting from the original films' stars added plenty of depth to the characters through the character interaction... Even if they didn't name the new guy. Star Wars Kinect, however... Eesh... I'm interested, because I love the Walking Dead Series, and the more developers trying, the better.

My ideal 'The Walking Dead' game would combine Day-Z's style of open world co-op survival with the polish and charm of a Left 4 Dead game. Hearing this would be an Activision published FPS game from the developers of Kinect Star Wars does not bode well with me. At least we have Telltale to do the franchise justice.

Somthing similar to fallout would tickle my fancy.

Isn't there going to be a movie based off of the TV series? Wouldn't that make this a licensed movie tie-in? Well...I'm sure Activision isn't THAT evil, right guys?

As others have pointed out, The Walking Dead is more about story and character development over gore and guts action. I can't help but feel that Activision are missing the point somewhat. Even if this does end up being rubbish, at least the fans can still have the Telltale game to be proud of. It's one of my favourite games this year.

Daryl is one of my favorite characters; so I'll at least rent the game.

I'd rather have an open world 4 player co-op Walking Dead game with survival as the main focus than this or the telltale games.

Eh. I will wait until I see gameplay to judge. But my gut tells me this is going to be a trainwreck.

I'm looking forward to the part of the game where the Merle brothers take part in a Dance Dance Revolution style dance off against the zombie horde. Or the part where you shuffle along in front of the kinect and get your own zombie character to move like you do. Unless this game gets an average of 8-9 I'm not interested. I'm still hurt over the Road to Fiddler's Green.

    No. Just no.

I worry that this developer will f _ _ck this game up. Let's hope not.

The Walking Dead has always been about characters and story rather than killing zombies, so there's no way this will be able to compare to the Telltale game. I'll still probably end up playing it either way though, so I hope it still turns out okay. I'm also a bit disappointed that they're going with the show's story this time rather than the book's like Telltale did, but I guess the ability to play as Norman Reedus is an awesome compromise.

If it has a good story i might get it.

A Walking Dead game could be cool, but I bet this will end up being a shitty QTE infested corridor shooter. If it had an open world and survival elements I might be interested, but knowing Activision I doubt that's the case.

Their developers are very restricitive in sand box activities. Probably, it will be comparable to call of duty.

Eh, I'll stick with Telltale's adaptation, thanks.
