UK Chart: Tomb Raider holds off God of War Ascension

Tomb Raider retained the top spot on the UK all formats all prices chart for the week ended March 16.

The game held off a trio of new releases in the form of God of War: Ascension StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm and Sniper 2: Ghost Warrior, while SimCity rounded off the top five.

God of War: Ascension failed to emulate the opening week success of God of War 3, which sold more than double as many copies to top the chart in March 2010. However, it did mange to record the second biggest week one performance in the series, surpassing the debut week of God of War 2, which took the No.1 spot back in May 2007.

GfK/Chart-Track Top 10 (previous week):

  1. Tomb Raider (Square Enix)
  2. God of War: Ascension (Sony)
  3. StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm (Activision Blizzard)
  4. Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 (City Interactive)
  5. SimCity (EA)
  6. FIFA 13 (EA)
  7. Far Cry 3 (Ubisoft)
  8. Crysis 3 (EA)
  9. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 (Activision)
  10. The Sims 3: university Life (EA)

We said in our Tomb Raider review: “Lara Croft's latest adventure is easily her best. Lara Croft, the old Lara Croft, is dead. In place of a dolled-up gunslinger is a do-what-it-takes survivor--and we hope she hasn't had her fill of adventuring just yet.”

Hi bass88, I assume you're referring to / questioning the 'first week sales' part of the story. If so, the older God of War games also came out on Fridays in the UK, so in these cases first week sales account for copies bought on Friday and Saturday. It’s the same for the majority of new games most weeks (Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 is another example this week), although increasingly we’re seeing so-called ‘event’ releases which launch globally on a Tuesday (such as Tomb Raider and most recently StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm). In the case of Heart of the Swarm, it’s also worth pointing out it’s likely that a not insignificant percentage of its overall sales were digital, which aren’t covered here as Chart-Track only provides data based on retail sales

I see. Don't worry, I'm not a slobbering fanboy. I was just curious (videogame figures are nowhere as simple as movie box-office figures). Thanks.

Didn't God Of War: Ascension only come out on Friday?
