Top Xbox Live games of 2012 revealed

Microsoft has released charts for the top Xbox Live games of 2012.

Originally published by Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hryb, director of programming for Xbox Live, the lists are based on average unique users per day connected to the online gaming service or full versions purchased between January 1 and December 31.

Unsurprisingly, Call of Duty games dominate the list of most played Xbox Live games, taking four of the top ten places, including Black Ops 2 at No.1 and Modern Warfare 3 at No.2. Two Halo games, two FIFA titles, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition and Battlefield 3 also charted.

Minecraft was also the most purchased Arcade game, coming in ahead of Trials Evolution, The Walking Dead, Pinball FX2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

The top-selling Indie game was CastleMiner Z, while the most played Games for Windows Live title was Grand Theft Auto 4. Check out the full chart rundowns below:

Nine Minecraft clones on the top indie list. NINE.

The amount of terrible Minecraft ripoffs in the indie list and lack of Mark of the Ninja in thw top arcade games list makes me deeply depressed

Agreement all around, this is quite depressing. That Indie Games list? With the exception of the pure gameplay experience that is The Impossible Game, and maybe (I say this charitably) one of those Minecraft cash-ins, all of those are just abysmal decisions on the part of players. You want real quality? I know the best ones: -I MAED A GAEM W1TH Z0MBI3S 1N1T!!!1 is a must-have, and so is -Zombie Estate, and -Dead Pixels. As far as non-zombie games go, there's: -MotorHeat -Score Rush -Decimation X3 -Hidden in Plain Sight -Super Amazing Wagon Adventure -anything with the radianGames label: JoyJoy, Crossfire, Inferno, flow, and Ballistic (my personal favorite) Just about all of those are arcade gaming masterpieces. And you can have just about all of them for around ten bucks. That ten dollars may be some of the best gaming value for your money you could ever get.

Interesting... Minecraft is apparently on the Top Xbox Live List twice. Other than that, this list is kind of depressing, especially looking at the indie games list. A high majority of them are Minecraft ripoffs, mostly shoddy. Then, to completely ruin my faith in humanity, one of the top-sold indie games is "Don't Die Dateless, Dummy." Really? REALLY? Playing that game is probably the one of the few things that *will* keep you dateless...

Surprised to see Fez underneath the likes of Gotham City Impostors, I Am Alive, Fruit Ninja Kinect, and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD. I'm glad that it's on the list, but I hoped that it would have done a bit better. It was one of my favorite games of the year.

ill never understand why Modern Warfare 3. Maybe people were THAT late.

Last year's CoD, Halo or other triple-A games making the top of the lists next year make sense when you think about it this way... they're always released in the closing months of the previous year, so plenty of concurrent users per day are still logging in to play into the months of January, February and so on, especially considering the early months of the year are dry as far as releases go. Their new counterparts this year manage to beat them in the concurrent user counts because of, well, their newness. Also, and this is opinion so you can choose to ignore it, MW3's online experience was on par if maybe a bit more enjoyable than BlOps 1, and definitely more enjoyable than MW2's as far as balance issues were concerned. The addition of pointstreaks galore with a new and improved hardline pro perk, coupled with the wise addition of support pointstreaks that carried on over deaths so not-as-good or not-as-kill-happy players could actually be useful was quite memorable.
