I would strongly object to Metal Gear's inclusion in this feature. As you argue yourself, MGS is really just the next generation of Metal Gear. I mean, if you're going to do 2D to 3D conversions, why not include Super Mario 64 of Ocarina of Time? Otherwise, interesting stuff on Donkey Kong etc.
  • talleyXIV - January 3, 2012 5:24 p.m.

I don't agree with putting Zelda or Mario on here even though their transformations were pretty spectacular. MGS did not have a game for 8 years as said in the article. 8 years is a long time to not have a game come out, so it was pretty much dead. So it came back to life in a new fashion. Series like Zelda and Mario were never even close to dying. Nintendo were no where near dropping them so they were never dead. The longest break between games in those series was probably 2 years.

I think that these entries were included because the series seemed to be over to all but a select few. After Snake's Revenge, one wondered if there was ever going to be another Metal Gear. But you always knew that there would be another Mario or another Legend of Zelda.

Great article Mikel! Why did it vanish for a few hours after it was first posted?
  • GamesRadarMikelReparaz - January 3, 2012 11 a.m.

Technical problems on the article's backend were dragging down the rest of the site, so it had to come down until we could figure out what happened. Sorry for the inconvenience, but it's all fixed now.

Where is Zelda? Its jump from A Link to the past to Ocarina of Time was HUGE and the way they pulled off Skyward Sword(Should be every sites GOTY, really WTF) Zelda really has come a long way! Also, again Skyward Sword... a 9... god damn GR...
  • ShowMeYourKitties - January 3, 2012 10:13 a.m.

The article was about rebirth and Zelda never died. This was all explained in the intro...
  • BladedFalcon - January 3, 2012 11:26 a.m.

He's a fandumb, what did you expect?
  • shawksta - January 3, 2012 1:25 p.m.

Its about games that died and then rebirthed, read well, Zelda never died genius. Also, enough already, Skyward Swords awesomes, GR's 9 is well deserved, and it was Top 5 GOTY, Dont fanrage your making sophisticated fans like me look like idiotic fanboys.

As a lover of the Zelda series, I feel I must say shut the hell up. Although OoT is 3D and LttP is 2D, they still play almost exactly the same. They have the same boss, the same items, and a lot of the same ideas. Zelda has not come a long way. It is a sad fact that you have to face. We have been playing the same game for over 20 years. However, the games are always spectacular so it doesn't matter. The series has no evolution going on for it except for graphics and in Skyward Sword's case, motion controls. The biggest leap however is Skyward Sword because of its new story, gameplay, and controls, but even saying that I can tell that many many many parts of it are simply copied from OoT and Twilight Princess. The series never died and probably never will. So unless that happens sadly do not post another dumb comment like this ever again. You make all Nintendo/Zelda fans look like silly little girls who whine about a game review or not being put on a list. It got a 9 so what? It probably did deserve a 10 but different people may enjoy different types of game more so leave it alone. Could it have been game of the year? To some people yes, however as I said different people like different things.

Last paragraph, third line I meant *games more* not "game more." Sorry!
  • Money - January 2, 2012 7:23 p.m.

Super Metriod > Modern Metriods Also no Duke nukem. Sadness
  • Primed - January 3, 2012 2:26 p.m.

The article is about rebirth. The new Duke Nukem was more of a Frankensteinesque horror of a malignant tumor on the ass an aborted fetus.
  • winner2 - January 3, 2012 2:35 p.m.

    That's some imagination you have
  • pimlicosound - January 5, 2012 8:46 a.m.

I think Money is referring to the change from Duke Nukem 2 (quirky PC side-scroller) to Duke Nukem 3D (multi-platform FPS megastar).
  • talleyXIV - January 5, 2012 2:18 p.m.

I hope you aren't talking about from Duke Nukem 3D to Duke Nukem: Forever. Playing that demo gave me AIDs.

How do games like Metroid Prime and Fallout 3 make it onto the "Seven Greatest Gaming Rebirths?" Fallout 3 being a farcry from what made well.. Fallout a Fallout game. Bethesda took was created with past games.. used bits and pieces and then spit out garbage. They neutered most of the open world exploration, trimmed off all the funny atmosphere, bastardized the Fallout setting. Destroyed one of the "Perfect" enemies of the Fallout universe. I just don't know. I also don't believe Fallout fans quieted down. No, Bethesda brought in a new generation of gamers who had no past experience with Fallout and rave it's the best thing ever. Even though it's just a shadow of it's predecessors. Fallout 3 is Oblivion with Guns. It's got Bethesda mediocrity all over it. As for New Vegas it was a step in the right direction. Going from Isometric to 3D FPS is fine. What's not fine is what Bethesda created. Metroid Prime.. there was no reason to go "First" person with it. They could of stayed with 2.5D and the game would of been just as good. The whole franchise has got worse and worse with each new release.
