Tomb Raider release date outed in new trailer

Shares

Yeah, we were sad when Tomb Raider got bumped out of 2012 too. It looked awesome, and was one of our most anticipated games of the year, so seeing it slip just out of reach... it was rough. Luckily, with E3 a few days away, we've been given a fancy new trailer to pine over, as well as a firm date to circle on our Lara Croft "Girls of Tomb Raiding" calender.

March 5, 2013 is the new date for Crystal Dynamic's exciting Tomb Raider. Not sure why we keep saying words like "exciting" and "cool" and "awesome" and "dirty" when describing the new Tomb Raider? Check out the trailer above, which shows off more of the game than we've ever seen, and we think you'll agree on all fronts.

Especially dirty - with all the swimming that's going on in that video you'd expect at least some of the sludge to wash off, right?

I think it's just me, but it seems that Tomb Raider and Farcry 3 have similar stories don't you think? They both involve being stranded on some island with crazy shenanigans. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, just something I seemed to find similar in the 2 games

How much abuse can Lara take? Just in this trailer she has been stabbed, burned, blown up, bit by a man, kicked, bit by a dog, hit by random environmental objects, snared, dropped and shot at. Its gritty but doesn`t do it for me. I`m fine with characters being banged up, but this is pushing it. Plus her voice just sounds off. Other than that everything looks great.

Yesterday I get marijuana charges dropped and today I get countless video game trailers for great looking games and my copy of Darksiders came in the mail. This has turned out to be a great week! Also, I really don't mind them taking from Uncharted after seeing that trailer.

Many times in this video i thought i was about to see rape.

I think it's borrowing a little too heavily from Uncharted, to the point where it even seems to have cover shooting, but it still looks fairly promising. Some of the dialogue towards the end sounded very cheesy though.

I didn't realize Uncharted invented cover shooting. (Protip, It didn't) Uncharted borrowed the shit out of Tomb Raider, and as far as I'm concerned, as long as the game is good (which it looks like it's going above and beyond) then a little reborrowing isn't an issue at all.

Im well aware Uncharted didn't invent cover shooting! It's not the point. It's the fact that Tomb Raider seems to be taking a lot of elements from the Uncharted series and replicating them including the cover shooting. Uncharted only borrowed the concept from Tomb Raider. It's gameplay was completely different. I would just prefer Tomb Raider to retain some of its earlier elements instead of becoming all cinematic like Uncharted and sacraficing its gameplay.

We haven't seen any gameplay yet, so let's not jump the gun and judge it. The gaming community as a whole tends to make up their minds as to whether games are good or not based on cutscenes and trailers alone. I have no doubt in my mind that Crystal Dynamics know what they are doing with this title (considering they're the ones who started Tomb Raider in the first place) and with Square Enix on board that's even better news.

The fact that we've seen so little gameplay is what worries me. We should be shown some solid gameplay by now. The game community may mostly make up their minds based on cutscenes and trailers, but I don't. I used to but I gave it up a long time ago. It's stupid if someone thinks a game is going to be great based on a cutscene, And I regret to inform you that Crystal Dynamics DID NOT start Tomb Raider in the first place. Core did. Crystal Dynamics took over as soon as TR Legend came along, which I thought was pretty mediocre, as was Underworld. So I need to see some gameplay before I get excited.

This looks great, I'm spotting loads of influences from other games but that's not a bad thing considering those influences do what they do brilliantly. Like a few others though I reckon that some of the lip-syncing doesn't seem right and Lara sounds a bit off. Sort of like someone pretending to put on a generic British accent but still sounding American. It reminds me of the voices in Heavy Rain where the European voice actors do that weird American accent.

Okay, I lack the brand fanboyism to egt as excited for this reveal. But still, it's a pretty fantastic trailer. Though it definitely borrows from Uncharted... But it looks far darker and with other cool stuff to get excited for! Such a great day this is! :3

Looks great. I like the way they build her character from someone who really doesn't want to be a killer, instead of being a normal woman who somehow has expert weapons proficiency and doesn't lose sleep after murdering a bunch of people. Can't wait!

Though the gameplay looks great, I don't like the way Lara looks and sounds in this trailer. Compared to the very first CG trailer for this game, her eyes look off, and she almost sounds American rather than British. Does anyone else feel this way, or am I just insane?
  • taokaka - June 1, 2012 1:10 a.m.

The accent does sound slightly different to me as well, however her appearance looks fine to me. But more importantly did you think the man that kidnaps Lara is a dead ringer for Joel from the last of us?
  • StonedMagician99 - June 1, 2012 5:09 a.m.

Actually, now that you mention it, they do look a bit similar.
  • StonedMagician99 - June 1, 2012 5:12 a.m.

Oh, and here's a comparison of her looks from the trailers: Original CG trailer: http://pixelsmashers.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Tomb-raider.jpg This trailer: http://www.gamesaktuell.de/screenshots/970x546/2012/05/Tomb_Raider_Lara_Croft__30_.jpg
  • taokaka - June 1, 2012 6:22 a.m.

Wow, she really does look different.
  • StonedMagician99 - June 1, 2012 6:42 a.m.

Yeah. This is gonna sound awkward, but I honestly feel like I'm ruining everyone else's fun by having this reaction. Is that weird? Everyone's so hyped for this game, and I'm nitpicking her eyes. It's amazing how something so small can make a character look so different.
  • Hobogonigal - June 1, 2012 7:45 a.m.

Just looked at the pics and yes, she does look quite different But don't worry mate, you haven't ruined it for me :)
