The pre-E3 surprise the whole world was hoping for... Or, er, a new Carmageddon, anyone?

Yeah, I don't think anyone saw this one coming. But coming a new iteration of the hit-and-run-tastic combat racer is nontheless. Really quickly, while no doubt mowing down a whole bunch of pedestrians (or zombies, if you live in Germany) along the way. Details? I've got them.

Above: The above proclamation may not be true

Carmageddon.com (registered to Square-Enix, and which I imagine is a new site, or else a really lonely one that's been sitting dormant since 2000, silently staring alone into the darkness, mournfully awaiting a new purpose) now has a countdown timer on it. The timer, at the time of me writing this exact sentence, is on 8:22:20:59. Which puts the reveal of whatever it is revealing at 10 am, the 1st of June. Which is about a week before E3. Wise move. Might as well build some awareness of the new game before the show, in order to avoid it being swamped when the machine gun deluge of announcements kicks off on the 7th.

So, excited? Surprised? Under 11 years old and wondering what the hell a Carmageddon even is anyway? Let me know in the comments.

Carmageddon 2 is still an all time favourite, the physics were just awesome.

"Absolutely loved the first two, detested TDR 3000 so hopefully they follow the right ones. been waiting for this for years." This is me as well.

I am excited and surprised. I liked the first one and simply adored the second installment. I'm pretty sure Carmageddon introduced me to Iron Maiden... and vehicular manslaughter.

Dude, people run over people in GTA. When I was a kid i thought this game was the most evilest, bloodiest game I ever played. Then I found out it was a piece of crap.

Hmmm, I wasn't expecting this. I'll watch a trailer or two, and then give some input.

Oh wow, that's pretty cool Now we just need a new Rollcage game and my early racing game days can be fully relived.

YESSSSS! this game has been on my top "They should remake this game, it'd be cool in this generation." List for a long long time.

I loved 2 but that's because I messed with the gibs settings, I didn't know there even was a 3. Hope they bring back the Iron Maiden soundtrack (for some reason)

That was forseeable after SqEnix stopped a fan project from using the name Carmageddon last year. I loved Carmageddon back in the day, hope they make a good sequel. Oh and in the German Carmageddon 1 the pedestrians were replaced with robots not zombies.

This game wasn't even that great when it was NEW. Oh well, I liked the multiplier for running over pregnant women, so you don't see me complaining.

Sehr Interessant, as the Germans would say. I hope this is more 1 than 2 or 3, though; 2 tried way too hard, and I didn't bother with 3. My interest is piqued, Square. Your move.

I THINK we had the original on the PC YEARS ago, and while I never played it, my Dad absolutely loved it. I'm sure he'll be over the moon with the possibility of mowing down more virtual pedestrians. It'll keep him off the streets, and keep real pedestrians safe.
  • insertdisk - May 23, 2011 1:14 p.m.

Never played the originals but I suppose this could be good. Gonna get dirt 3 for now though. also Captcha: one? howiter Only one? Good lord!

I worked at CompUSA when the first one came out. It caused such a frenzy that our store actually pulled the game off the shelves.
  • Ninja-Monkey-91 - May 23, 2011 12:26 p.m.

Colour me intriguied. I loved the first one be interested to see what an updated version would be like. Think XBLA/PSN may be the way to go though.
  • chipschivers - May 23, 2011 12:19 p.m.

Got some crap news this morning but this has put a massive smile on my face. I loved these games when i was a teen and have been waiting for a squeal to TDR for years.
  • majorsuave - May 23, 2011 12:13 p.m.

I doubt it will cause the same commotion it did when Carmageddon came out. However, if it is well done, nice XBLA/PSN title could come out of this. I don't see a lot of people paying 60$ to mow pedestrians and cows
