TGS 2011: Final Fantasy XIII-2's plot unravels in new teasers, North America and UK release dates set

We may never fully understand Square Enix's affinity for ill-fitting love ballads, but thanks to these new Final Fantasy XIII-2 trailers from TGS 2011, we at least have more insight into the twisty turny time travelling plot of its forthcoming RPG sequel.

Clocking in at roughly three minutes each, the new videos offer a meaty preview of the game's storyline and the new character designs in store for FFXIII-2's returning cast. Both trailers also feature music by international recording artist Charice - which would be perfect if these were previews for 'Touched By An Angel: The Game', but otherwise feel out of place amidst scenes of monsters, magic and space-time paradoxes.

This first trailer for PS3, entitled Promise, leaps back and forth to show Snow, Hope and Sarah at various stages in their search for FFXIII heroine Lightning.

The second trailer for Xbox 360, entitled Despair, stars FFXIII-2 newbie Gaius and delves deeper into the game's time travel plot twists.

Square Enix confirmed last week that Final Fantasy XIII-2 will arrive for PS3 and Xbox 360 in North America on January 31, 2012, and in the UK on February 3, 2012.

The song really took the seriousness out of the trailers. -_- I'm still very hopeful for this game though.

This would be appropriate if Serah last name was Connor... Sigh... I never get Jpn dev nowadays, I find it disturbing and amusing at the same time if they think this is what audience, especially western, wants. "Toss around time travel, time paradox and animal abuse gameplay. This is so gonna sell, Yay!! I was drunk when writing XIII and it sold 6 mil. I'm so awesum!!" You better thank the deity of your choice for graphic department, your composer and whoever made Lightning, because your story is looking dubious at best, Squeenix. Rant over...

The music is so inappropriate for the trailers. My ears are still on fire...

The plot appears to be even more confusing than the last's. Oh what fun! :D Really Can't Wait For This Game.

So far, what we've seen of the plot hasnt impressed me much so far, but at least its got the same awesome battle system and Lightning in sexy Soul Calibur-esque armour. :)

Plot-wise this game looks like a mess. Presentation and gameplay looks amazing though.

Where's Sazh...? This plot seems to be wandering into the complicated confusion a la Kingdom Hearts 2, but I'm definitely excited about it!

Yeah, stories about time travel/alternate dimensions tend to do that a la Final Fantasy VIII and Chrono Cross. Chrono Trigger was simple enough to understand, though. I bet if you delve deep enough into it, though, you could find tons of plot holes...

Yeah, where is our favorite minority with an afro??? Fang and Vanille aren't there for obvious reasons, but what about Sazh. Kanye isn't going to be happy about this one.

I've never enjoyed Final Fantasy's cheesy vocal songs. No, not even "Eyes On Me"
  • Gahmah - September 20, 2011 12:46 p.m.

Sure, I enjoy'em, but what was up with this one?... Also does lightening's knife turn into a handgun and.... oh wait that didn't happen in the end of the game, Hope was holding on to that knife, TIME STREAMSSSSS wooooo

Well her sword did that even in FF XIII. If you'll notice, she always finished off melee combos with a backward/flip + gunshot in that game.
