Since last year’s E3 demo, showing hyper-detailed fighters and some fearsome moves, we haven't heard a lot about Tekken’s PS3 incarnation. Generally, the way of Tekken games is that they disappear for a bit, only to resurface in the arcades before hitting the PlayStation proper. This is cutting it close, though - a release date for early 2008 may have been slated, but this marks our first major post-E3 viewing.
Then again, Tekken’s never needed to blow its own trumpet. The quality of the gameplay speaks for itself, and its fans don’t need stoking up for any new release. Just feast your eyes on this screenshot - visually, at least, Tekken still packs a punch. No doubt, the game will undergo even further polishing to ensure it stands apart from its arcade brother come launch day.
That same edge is promised in terms of combat. Apart from the Versus mode, which is guaranteed to get a battering in the absence of any online play, there’s the Arcade Battle mode, which, on completion, enables you to customize the appearance of your fighter. There’s also Ghost Battle mode, which awards you cash for spending on fancy new threads in the game’s shop - depending on how well you tear the opposition apart.
