TalkRadar UK Episode 96 - Sentient Tanks

Listen now...

Have you heard of a game by Rockstar North called Wild Metal? No. Don't worry, neither did two thirds of this week's podcast team but that doesn't stop Cundy going on about it for 20 minutes or so. We'd like to say the rant is informative but, well, give it a listen and you'll find out why it isn't.

Also on this week's TalkRadar UK there's prolonged chatter about Shadow of the Damned's brilliance, why one team member won't be returning to the streets of L.A. Noire and why Uncharted 3's multiplayer beta is good, but not great. Oooh, controversial.

There's also a bizarre tale of how one of the men has ended up with a pair of blue arms. This alone makes this week's show worth a listen, so come get some gaming goodness in your ears.

Ive heard a lot of criticism for L.A Noire but clearly it must be at least an o.k game to play if people are still playing it this far down the line to find all these problems

Will be listening to this on the way to Sonisphere this weekend! As a note, the page title is labeled incorrectly. It's says 95 when underneath you say it's 96 ;)

Cundy's appreciation sections always remind me of the film reviews Ricky Gervais used to do on XFM...
  • Mooshon - July 6, 2011 2:33 p.m.

I feel sad for LA Noire. Awesome attempt at some new and exciting mechanics and story driven gaming, just deflated a bit by that repetitive homicide desk in the middle. Apart from those pacing issues I loved every second. Good show lads.

Haha, I just had to see what this "Wild Metal" was after hearing this podcast! As for the Uncharted 3 beta - I can't say I'm as enthusiastic as Nathan. I enjoyed Uncharted 2's multiplayer and found it surprisingly competent for a first effort. However, Uncharted 3 is mediocre to me, it's not doing anywhere near enough to compete with proper multiplayer focused games, so I think Naughty Dog are making a mistake here. All the effort put into multiplayer would be much more appreciated on a longer and more enjoyable single-player component in my view. Also, the visuals for the multiplayer beta are also very underwhelming and look very rough. I read that this isn't the case for the final game which I hope is true but as it is I'm not seeing a game here that looks better than most other third-person shooters, particularly Gears of War 3 (which I don't even intend to buy nor do I even have a 360, but it's clear the game is looking better than Uncharted 3 for multiplayer). Was kinda of hard to even convince myself to play the beta after Team Fortress 2 went F2P a few days earlier. After 20 minutes of beta I went straight back to TF2, which is nearly a 4 year old game, so I think that says it all for me.

@Mooshon Yeah, I think their intentions are good and deserve credit. How many developers are willing to take risks like that these days? Personally I like LA Noire -- would rate it a solid 7/10 -- so am sad to see that there's bad relations between Rockstar and Team Bondi. Was hoping for another similar, and improved, game in future.

i must be playing a different beta to Crofto, i felt the moving shadows of palm trees and other lighting effects seemed above and beyond most other single player games currently on consoles, it doesnt beat crysis 2 upgrade on pc, but for a multiplayer i felt the game stands head and shoulders abover other 3rd person shooters, normally you see mp produciton values drop just to they can make sure other mechanics and general connections, matchmaking work.I like the fact that the levels are so well desinged, cover seems natural rather than loads of waist height sandbags all over the place ala gears.Gears cut scenes look nice but come on every male is a huge steriod addict who only wears grey, brown or black, unreal engine is tired and why so shiny? I doubt naughty dog will let single player suffer for mp, unlike 90% of other developers. Also i have to say i think sony are wrong jumping on the greedy band wagon of the online pass.No other industry acts like this. You dont keep giving ford a percentage of your car sale do you? When you sell your house does the original builder get a cut each and every time ? Used sales actually prop up new games sales spend a saturday in a games shop and see how many people pay full price and how many use games/cash to get the new game they want. games are over priced, developers should offer the first dlc for free to keep you on the game, then start to charge and make more revenue this way. Initially games would sell more if they were cheaper. This could help a little towards pircay also.
