Sorry, Mirror's Edge fans, it looks like DICE is doing Battlefield 2143 next. Or is just trolling you

Some game developers like to give us cool easter eggs hinting at upcoming games. See Naughty Dog’s hidden teaser for The Last Of Us in Uncharted 3 for evidence of this. Other devs just throw fake easter eggs around, essentially to f*ck with us because they are cruel and cold people. See Rare’s 2007 Christmas card for evidence of that one. Killer Instinct 3. I’m still waiting. Which one will DICE’S Battlefield 2143 teaser turn out to be? Let’s look at the evidence and find out. But here’s a clue. It’s probably the former. A moderately-sized downloadable case of the former.

  • A bit of scenery has been found in Battlefield 3’s Back to Karkand DLC has been found emblazoned with the number 2143. 2143 is the number after 2142. The PC-only Battlefied 2142 already exists, and is set in the year 2142.

Above: Evidence! Evidence of non-lies!

  • In 2009, EA and DICE released a downloadable mini-sequel to the original - PC-only - Battlefield 1942, called Battlefield 1943. 1943 is the number after 1942.
  • Before Battlefield 2142 was released, it was quietly teased a few times in Battlefield 2’s own Armored Fury add-on pack, via the emblazoning of the number 2142 on car number plates and billboards.

Synergy! Parallels! Echoes of the past rippling into the future, both literally and via in-game universe! Or, you know, a quite fun, quirky marketing ploy by an otherwise cold unfeeling multinational corporation. Either way, I reckon we’re looking at another futuristic Battlefield, very probably a multiplayer-only, bite-sized downloadable one to make up for the original's lack of console appearance, being officially announced very soon. Probably just after the start of the new year, so as to not confuse the poor folks who are getting BF3 for Christmas because it is a big famous game, but don’t actually know much about games outside of the big famous ones.

Titan Mode? In Frostbite 2? WANT. I can say that it's my favourite gamemode after Conquest. Incorporating both Conquest style silo capping plus corridor objective gun fights in the Titan. Also balancing resources between assaulting the Titan and keeping the silos. Never did understand why future LMGs get MORE accurate with sustained fire... And if this turns out to be true (probably), DICE will have partially remade the entire main BF series in Frostbite 2: 1942 - 1943 Vietnam - BC2 Vietnam 2 - Back to Karkand 2142 - 2143

I did like me those mechs from 2142 (that was actually my first experience with the franchise, although it is also the only Battlefield outside of Bad Company 1 that I don't own).

I really hope this is true. Titan mode is probably one of the best multiplayer styles every created, which led to some truly epic fights. And those launch pod in the Titan and APC's were just damn good fun.

PRAISE JEEBUS 2142 WAS THE BEST GAME IN THE SERIES THAT WOULD TOTALLY REMOVE THE SCARS IN MY HEART FROM THE SHITTY BATTLEFIELD 3 I MIGHT EVEN INSTALL ORIGIN TO GET IT

I must put in my obligatory comment that 2142 borrowed heavily from PlanetSide. Interestingly, the PlanetSide 2 devs have said they are taking influence from "Battlefield"... I wonder if they looked carefully at 2142 in particular to see if it made improvements on the original PlanetSide's mechanics.

But didn't Planetside borrow a lot from Battlefield originally?
  • MetroidPrimeRib - December 19, 2011 12:12 p.m.

Planetside is one of my favorite series. I cannot wait for three.

    Conspiracy theories!

YES!! 2142 was still one of my favorite shooters of all time. There was just something about taking down a walker with a rocket for the first time that cannot be replaced with any scripted scene ever.

I would like to second that 2142's Titan mode was epic. Having such a visible and important objective really unified the team, and I fondly remember defending and conquering many Titans.

Vietnam please DICE. That is all.
  • gmcb2011 - December 19, 2011 9:57 a.m.

    Did it.
  • InFeRnOg - December 19, 2011 10:58 a.m.

Yes you have heard of Bad Company 2? And the Vietnam DLC that went with it?
  • Radimir - December 19, 2011 8:58 a.m.

Might be a nice break from the string of modern Battlefield games. BF3 is awesome, but a return to the future as laid out in 2142 would be /very/ interesting. Still hoping that they decide to make another 'full' World War II one, or at least release 1943 on PC.

I'm sure it will have just as much bloom n brown right?
  • Errrrbo - December 19, 2011 8:42 a.m.

Not Mirror's Edge 2? Well then, moving right along...
  • ArbokDaKobra - December 19, 2011 8:40 a.m.

I personally thought 2142 was the best and purest Battlefield ever made. Titan mode was, and still is the best multiplayer mode ever, in any game. I played it seemingly everyday for 2 or 3 years. I CANNOT wait for this!
  • therawski - December 19, 2011 8:36 a.m.

I never played 2142 but I saw a few videos. I find myself wanting a space marine shooter, as long as it's not Halo.
  • therawski - December 19, 2011 12:41 p.m.

I changed my mind, I would rather have a new Mirror's Edge first, but I still I like Battlefield.
  • AwesomeMan - December 19, 2011 8:33 a.m.

I certainly hope we're getting a 2143...I played the craaaap out of 2142 and I really would love to see the return of Titan mode....So amazing!
