Sonic Lost Worlds debut trailer goes fast

The hyperspeed needlemouse is back in form in the IGN debut trailer for Sonic Lost Worlds. The Sega/Nintendo collaboration looks like a fast, frenzied version of Super Mario Galaxy. We're not complaining.

No ancient ruins, pistol-packing hedgehogs, or insufferable emerald-collecting Knuckles levels here. Just a couple of colorful punks threatening cute woodland creatures and a blue blur streaking by to defeat them.

We'll see if Sonic Lost Worlds can restore the classic franchise when it debuts exclusively on Wii U and 3DS in 2013.

definitely fun only thing that has me worries is that when a game has multiple platform based versions 1 usually ends up being a fair amount better, hope the 3ds version doesn't fall far behind as it's usually the handheld version that's lacking

Well the trailer makes it look like a hell of a lot more fun than most of them recently, although colors and generations were not bad at all, but as with all Sonic games now I'm cautiously optimistic.. I don't think that's such a bad thing.

A sonic game I actually want to play, What is this sorcery?
  • Fireninjastar - May 29, 2013 9:45 a.m.

Wha-Whats this? A new Sonic game with no... Plot Important recolors? No Wanna-be realistic art style? No- no boosting. No boosting? NO FREAKING BOOSTING?! EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE I feel... At peace... I feel... holy... that a large rock of a grudge has been pulled off of me... Now, I sit in the back of my chair, stare into space... and think about the goodness in the world... Boy do I feel awkward. Well, new Sonic game that actually changed. People are gonna love it, people who have no idea what a rental store is gonna bash about it's exclusiveness, it's gonna be all out awesome. Oh, and on the 3DS? No more of this Dimps "Rush" Bulls**t. FINALLY.

Hell yeah, i heard about Sonic X Treme on this site a few years back, and i thought they should have made it, it would have been a great game! And now we have a game that closely resembles it, im pretty damn happy. I reeeeeally hope it comes to PS4 though
  • C.King - May 29, 2013 9:09 p.m.

ditto except for the ps4 part i don't mind if nintendo took possession of the character if they can work thier magic on it, if sega was better off with out em then it'd be more profitable to stay multiplatform... sonic 06 was nintendo excluded.... lucky

Its a really simple thing, but I love Sonic's running animation. Also the game looks great, it does look a lot like Mario Galaxy, but lets not forget Sonic was created from speed running Mario Bros. Can't wait for this.

YES!!! another sonic game that i will totally be buying YA!! even though it's another version of Mario galaxy I DON'T CARE sonic will totally make it better :D
  • shawksta - May 28, 2013 5:16 p.m.

Damn, the game definitely looks.colorful. It's taking cues from Galaxy and there's nothing wrong with that, Mario Galaxy and it's sequel set bars way too high for the 3D Platforming genre because it works and did successful Abe made.the.genre relevant. If Sega keeps the momentum Colors and Generations had, it's definitely gonna be great.

kinda funny to think about if you get mario infinite rainbow shroom in galaxy it'd be really similar to this game i see no issue at all with it being similar with galaxy since it's a nintendo collaboration and sonic xtreme kinda came with the concept first though was never released
  • CUFCfan616 - May 28, 2013 3:29 p.m.

Just one issue with the camera and a 3d Sonic game is crap forever
  • shawksta - May 28, 2013 5:32 p.m.

Thats exactly right, which was why past Sonic games and other 3D Platformers in general like Epic Mickey fell flat. Lost World's much more open world with no walls, Just like Super Mario Galaxy, is the possible solution, Mario galaxy never had the Camera problem because of the much more open space world that had no walls.

At least it's not "Fish-eye lens". Blech.
  • shawksta - May 29, 2013 7:01 p.m.

    YEEESH you got that right
  • pl4y4h - May 28, 2013 3:13 p.m.

When i said, "Sonic Galaxy" I was kidding Sega. Anyways, i don't like the look, but that's probably cause i don't care about 3d sonic games anymore. I went adventure 1, adventure 2, generations and i'm set until a good sonic comes out (or another solid 2d sonic comes out)

More like Super Sonic Galaxy. ...I'm okay with this. Looking forward to more info on it!
  • GR_JustinTowell - May 28, 2013 2:53 p.m.

It can only be a good thing! But as SnakeinmyBoot says, it's very much like Sonic X-Treme, which was ten years before Mario Galaxy, so finally we're getting to play its mechanics. Read what Hooters said about the similarities in his excellent article here: This looks great. I am very excited.
  • Talvari - May 28, 2013 4:11 p.m.

Damn...that was quite the read. Kinda sad to read as well. Can't believe I didn't know that project existed ;..; Thanks for the link. Even more hyped for this though after reading it! Those gameplay videos look pretty neat even now. Must have been pretty mind blowing back then.
  • GR_JustinTowell - May 29, 2013 2:20 a.m.

It was mixed back then. A lot of people were very excited, but some journos at the time were apalled. One said it was, flatly, 'awful'. However, I think that was probably due to the hardware limitations that were getting in the way of some pretty radical and ground-breaking ideas. Today, of course, we can see Mario Galaxy in its DNA and appreciate what Chris Senn and friends were trying to achieve.
  • shawksta - May 28, 2013 5:17 p.m.

You got that right, it's definitely following Xtreme, I guess after the bar set high by Galaxy's successful platforming, Sonic Xtreme's mechanics would definitely fit in. An extremely good move.
