Rumour: Marvel vs Capcom 3 announcement imminent

Yes, the internet rumour mill is at it again, and this time it's churned out a particularly tasty blend of excitement fodder. Word has it that following its recent big fighting game sucess with Street Fighter IV and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Capcom is all set to announce a revisistation of its classic superhero mash-up Marvel vs. Capcom. Here are the details and closer look at the situation.

The rumour comes from a story over on Team Spooky, claiming that the big C is priming the announcement for May, just a couple of months before E3. Why should we pay more attention to this than any of the other 8, 769, 007 rumours on the internet? Because the claimant is the same guy who exposed Super Street Fighter IV's full character roster well before the official reveal. But there are a few other things to consider on this one, on both sides of the "Is it true?" seesaw:

  • Tatsunoko vs. Capcom Producer Ryuta Niitsuma said earlier in the year that he'd love to do another 'vs' game if TvC sold well. He even went as far as saying that if the game was successful, we could hear an announcement within the year. That sounds like the word of a man who already has plans to us. And TvC has done pretty well, particularly for a Wii-exclusive with a character roster half made up of fighters most westerners don't know. Multiply 'pretty well' by a Marvel license and a release on both HD consoles and you've got big money on the way.

  • The current state of that Marvel license is a murky area. Activision is still churning out Spidey games, and who knows what the situation is with new deals since Disney bought out the comic company. Though given that Capcom was allowed to re-publish MvC2 on XBLA and PSN last year, we'd guess there's still some leeway. Though how easy it would be to get a new game on the go is unknown.
  • Regarding MvC2. It was a welcome re-release but an unexpected one. Was Capcom testing the water to see if it was warm enough to dunk a sequel into? We'd be speculating wildly however we answered that question, but it's not impossible.
  • Following Street Fighter IV and TvC, a new MvC could be amazing. Take one look at that 100% genuine, totally real, not Photoshopped at all screenshot at the top of the page and tingle with excitement. Blend the frantic combat anarchy of MvC and TvC with SFIV's show-stopping cinematic Ultra combos and you've got a scarily good prospect. Especially if you take into account MvC2's three-way team super moves. Gurgle. That's all we have to say. Gurgle.

But what do you think? Is this rumour likely to come true? Would you want it to? And if so, what characters and gameplay features would you like to see in MvC3? As always, let us know in the comments, or via our portals on Facebook and Twitter.

  • ultimatepunchrod - April 8, 2010 2:35 p.m.

this would be awesome. ive been playing 1 and 2 again on my dreamcast recently and i love them. i just want them to include dante from DMC as a playable character. i think he would fit a lot better than jill from RE who actually got to be in one of them. anyway i hope this is true.

Sorry, but the venom vs ryu pic looks shopped, the lightning is different, the render mode that makes SF4 look so pretty is present in ryu but not present in spidey. Also, spidey's hand looks a bit like Seth's in some weird color. But I do hope I'm wrong and we finally get an HD vs I would love even a MvC hd remix :P
  • Samael - April 8, 2010 2:54 p.m.

@vinicusg.t.guedes Dude. They know the screenshot is fake. They're just using it as a vague reference of what COULD be possible. Back to the article, have Deadpool as a playable character and I'd play this on principle alone.
  • GR_DavidHoughton - April 8, 2010 3:05 p.m.

Yeah, we do know the screenshot is a fake. We made it ourselves. As a joke.
  • Zombie711 - April 8, 2010 3:29 p.m.

it better com out on the wii because its because of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom that we are getting what ever this game will be
  • n00b - April 8, 2010 3:32 p.m.

that would be figgin awesome! that goes with out saying for me it would be more awesome if it was 2D like blaze blue. but that probably wont happen what can i say i just love my sprites
  • NeoKef - April 8, 2010 4:13 p.m.

On Capcom's side, the need to include Dante, Viewtiful Joe, Zero, and a bunch of different Megamans. On Marvel's side, they need to include The Fantastic Four and DareDevil.
  • Mar27w - April 8, 2010 4:15 p.m.

its good news as long as thier talking about a true 2D handdrawn sequel, something to match blazblue graphically and not just a variation of the 3D streetfighterIV engine which i think was shit and inferior to HDremix
  • SonicX_89 - April 8, 2010 4:25 p.m.

A new Marvel vs. Capcom would be awesome. Personally, a new Capcom vs. SNK would be of greater interest to me.
  • Cyberninja - April 8, 2010 7:34 p.m.

they should make this game it would sell like hot cakes with free money on them
  • Amnesiac - April 8, 2010 8:02 p.m.

Seems unlikely, but stranger things have happened. Deadpool Deadpool Deadpool Deadpool Deadpool Deadpool.
  • BlackElement17 - April 8, 2010 8:34 p.m.

I really hope this is true, also Deadpool.
  • RebornKusabi - April 8, 2010 9:52 p.m.

Jesus David! You seriously have me hoping for this so much, even if it is a rumor. I second some of the comments about this game, if this comes to exist, hopefully having Deadpool and some of the other better known (by us nerds), but not as publicized, Marvel characters in it. All of this with Street Fighter 4 graphics and I would literally ***! Literally -_-
  • iamawesome - April 8, 2010 10:13 p.m.

The pic might just have come form the PC version of SF4. You can mod characters and give them different costumes.
  • JeffGoldblum1 - April 9, 2010 5:47 a.m.

A MvC3 in the Street Fighter IV engine would be goddamn fantastic and I'm not even into fighting games.
  • philipshaw - April 9, 2010 10:53 a.m.

I would love it to be true because I want to be taken for a ride
