Prototype

Good, bad... you're the guy with the telescoping horror-arms

Words: Mikel Reparaz on June 10, 2009

If you’ve ever played 2005’s The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction (or the lukewarm 2008 follow-up from Sega), then you know that its “hero” aspect is largely inconsequential. Who cares about saving puny humans when you can make boxing gloves out of their cars and smash their buildings into rubble? Being a rampaging monster was a lot more fun than trying to be a good guy, and that was something Radical Entertainment – also the developer of Ultimate Destruction – seems to have taken to heart when creating Prototype.

Above: Go on, embrace your inner murderbeast. You know you want to

While it looks like a standard superhero game, Prototype is really more about running amok through Manhattan as an unstoppable force of nature. Its protagonist, Alex Mercer, has been infected by a virus that’s turning everyone else into zombies and oversized mutants, but in his case has just given him amnesia and a fat portfolio of really gross superpowers. As the island gradually descends into zombie-infested chaos, Alex has to contend not only with swarms of increasingly monstrous infected, but also with the trigger-happy military, who are hell-bent on killing him before he uncovers the truth about his identity.

To help him survive, Alex has a staggering array of powers and special attacks, most of which revolve around turning his arms into weird implements of destruction. Busting out a set of claws enables him to slash his enemies to ribbons and impale them with underground spikes, while the telescoping “whipfist” can slice large crowds of enemies (or civilians) in half, hit distant enemies and grab helicopters for easy skyjacking. His “hammerfist” power turns his hands into huge, heavy spheres for blunt-force trauma, and transforming one of his arms into a single huge blade enables him to slice open tanks in seconds. Infrared and “Infected” vision powers help him single out enemies when the action gets too thick, he can grow a suit of armor to protect himself from the game’s tougher enemies and - when his health is either really high or really low – he can bust out massive “Devastator” attacks capable of killing everything around him.

Above: Sort of like this

Oh, and he can fly. Or something awfully close to it, once you’ve fully unlocked his air-dash and gliding abilities. Used in tandem, they can give you a boosted glide that’s good for covering large distances in a hurry. Finally, Alex is able to use any weaponry dropped by soldiers, ranging from M-16s to heat-seeking bazookas, although this aspect doesn’t get really cool until you’ve gained the ability to call in airstrikes or jack tanks and helicopter gunships. (That said, the canned animation that accompanies every tank-jacking could have stood to be a lot shorter, as Alex’s posing makes it more likely he’ll get knocked off the tank by a rocket before climbing inside.)

Above: A brief sampling of what Alex is capable of

You’ll need to play for a while before you earn all this stuff, of course, but Prototype plays it smart by starting out near the end of its story, offering a quick taste of what full-powered Alex can do in a completely infested Times Square. Once that’s over, you’re sent – via flashback - to square one. The city quiets down and you’re left pining for those kickass abilities, which have been reduced to just sprinting up walls, throwing cars and chunks of scenery, and absorbing people to get a health boost and the ability to disguise yourself as them.

Thankfully, you’ll feel like you’re earning those powers back quickly. In its first few hours, Prototype rewards you with tons of “evolution points” for every mission you accomplish, every military base you clear out and every infected fiend you consume, enabling you to unlock awesome new powers every few minutes. It’s not until fairly late in the game that a feeling of grinding through levels sets in, although by that point the upgrades are strictly optional, and you’ll have unlocked so many that you’ll probably have a hard time keeping track of them anyway.

Above: Seriously, there’s like 113 of these things to unlock

There’s one caveat: the more powerful you become, the more likely you are to notice one of Prototype’s central flaws: the controls are great for blasting around like a high-speed madman, but they can be a tantrum-inducing bastard when you need them to be precise. If you’re trying to scale narrow surfaces (like the pinnacle of the Empire State Building, for example), you’ll need to take it extremely slow if you don’t want to leap out into space – and even then, Alex might inexplicably hurl himself off the building with no input from you. Similarly, the game’s rooftop races can quickly turn frustrating if you’re not careful, as a careless flick of a thumbstick while air-dashing can send Alex careening in the exact opposite direction you wanted, usually off a building.

I pretty much agree with theeambassor and all others who have said it, both deserve and are 8s.
But to add to that, each have aspects that appeal to diferent people.

    INFAMOUS
    >More compelling stoy
    >Better graphics

    PROTOTYPE
    >Quicker paced.(Especially when scaling buildings.)
    >Gorier and more blood.
    >Slightly funner.

though I do have somthing we can all agree about,Alex's jacket just looked so ficken cool.I'd love to get one of my own.

Ya know at 1st i was mad with the score you gave infamous compared to this but then again its a matter of opinion. Personally, i liked them both about the same except that i can beat infamous in about a day or 2 just doing the main storyline but i can beat prototype in about 3 hours. it was way too short in my opinion.

I've had this game for a while, as well as Infamous, and both are amazing. However, the sheer enormity of upgrades in [PROTOTYPE] starts to seem a little rediculous after a while. Alas, great game. You think there might be a second Infamous? I felt like the ending kinda left you hanging, left you waiting for that ultimate fight with "The Beast".

    Mikel,
It looks like drushi1 was right. Prototype is sitting at 77 on Metacritic (and will probably go lower) while inFamous is at 85 (with almost 80 reviews - which means that it will stay there). Your opinion about the quality of these games apparently sucks. You get praise from all these sheep for sharing your opinion on the game, but its apparently a dumb opinion. Do you think that Rosie O'Donnell is hotter than Jessica Biel? Do you prefer KIAs to Porches. Does it make you brave to say that a lame game is good - no it just makes you look dumb.

I don't think there are any online options. Just single-player, unless something unlocks when you finish the game...

Every time a flame war goes on past 6 pages, God kills a kitten. And removes both of the discussed games from existence. I like these games too, so let's try to find another topic of discussion than InFAMOUS v Prototype, shall we? Anyone still looking to troll on THAT topic can do so to their heart's content at Gamefaqs.

Also, let's enact a citizen's ban on Howetzer for dragging it out this far.

@ Matthew Keast, the whole power line and railway grind gets you around pretty fast, especially if you link them with the gliding. but tbh, you don't need to travel very far at one time, the city isn't too massive and most missions are well grouped near each other.

I might be able to clarify a few points. Note: I've played about 10 hours of Prototype, and I only played the InFamous demo.

Certain qualities that people may see as nitpicks are important to others. For example: movement in both of these games. From what I've played, Prototype's movement is much faster and fluid, BUT I'm not saying it's better. InFamouse has more "solid" climbing mechanics and is more deliberate. Some people would find that "weightiness" more enjoyable. Some will find Prototype's super-fast movement more enjoyable.

While movement could seem nitpicky, for some people it may be a big deal, since in both games you spend a lot of time traversing the city.

For another person, graphics may be important, and InFamous looks a lot more polished in that department. However, Prototype doesn't look BAD. Furthermore, having worked as a QA tester for several years, I have a good idea why Prototype looks the way it does. It has huge draw distances, combined with a ton of people+enemies on screen at once, plus explosions and other effects. They surely had to scale back the graphical detail to make the game run smoothly, and it does run quite smoothly. In order to maintain Alex's sense of speed, they sacrificed detail. That may or may not bother you.

Finally, Prototype is not a button masher. The skill selection is massive, and if you learn to use them, you can be like a ninja, dodging attacks, counter-attacking, etc. You also have to switch powers to be effective. It is far from mindless.

Given all this, I understand why Mikel likes Prototype more. Like him, I found InFamous' movement too "sticky", which made getting around somewhat of a chore, whereas in Prototype getting around is hugely fun and a total breeze. However, I only played the InFamous demo, so I can't claim a comprehensive assessment. Do you get powers in InFamous that allow really fast travel later in the game?

I understand if you can't read, but you seem to be able to type so that can't be your excuse you must have read my answer to both yours and Elporks question already. You just must be borderline retarded or something and not have understood the answer then? Read my fucking posts you fucking idiot jackass and you would see the answer you dumb fuck. Is that clear enough for you Thor or should I dumb that down for you too?
You are the idiots basing what you do on what others say, I am not. You are going to buy prototype because it LOOKS more fun, well how the fuck do you know that? Because Mikel told you it was fun to play? Fuck off.

so, i haven't played either, except infamous demo. and idk. i'm kinda curious how prototype is. my friend said its hella cool and after i played infamous, it was kinda boring. i don't feel like spending 60 on a game that bored me in the demo. oh well, time to rent from gamefly.

Holy fucking shit is howetzer a fucking whiner. Again I ask the question just like ElPork asked.

Do you base your life completely on what others say?

I ask this because you have huge fuckin text walls whenever people have something to say. Then you react like a bitch getting muscle fucked.

Im going to buy this because despite its slight graphical flaws it looks like its going to be alot more FUN than InFamous.

i agree with michaelmcc827, we all love Mikel but this war is annoying. Plus the more you argue with people like Howetzer the more they are going to write, and i don't think we want any more of that. so just ignore them, just like you did to bullies in elementary school, then eventually they will go away. :)

anyways, what i really wanted to say: i love hoe metacritic actually uses the "just for you metacritic" part lol. Now they don't even need to read the article, they can just go to the end and copy paste!

The review is fine, Mikel makes good points but ultimately I'm surprised that this game got a 9. It's a fun game no doubt, but it's also a rather shallow experience with less stellar graphics and some weak controls.

Sadly because inFamous came out around the same time the two games are going to get compared. I'm just wondering: Based on both reviews and the negatives listed at the end of both reviews how is a 2 point difference between the two games justified? Based on the review and the justification on the podcast, a lot of inFamous' score was based on the side missions and the lackluster city design. But both of those points can be made about Prototype too...So where is the two point difference coming from?

Ultimately it irks me that Prototype is getting a pass on a lot of bad design elements because of the stuff it does well. I've been following this game for well over a year and have been looking forward to it since Sierra owned the property. The promise was there. But in the end the game looks like it was rushed to market. The graphics and draw distances aren't very good and the controls are just off.

    A fun game yes, but a 9? I own the game...but I just can't see it.

I still love you guys though.

    @Howetzer

Calm down for 10 seconds, get down off your horse, and go back and read your original post. Keep track of all your references to Metacritic, now try to figure just why people would come to the conclusion that that's all you care about. The entire thing reads like a stupid angry fanboy who is still mad about the 7 inFamous received. Also just because you put a "lol" after something does not make it a joke, the way that sentence reads in the context of your post is "You're wrong, I'm right, I laugh at me thinking you're wrong" You can't just throw that in after your whole angry Metacritic rant and think it will read as a joke.

(I was already sitting down, should I lie down instead?)
