Playing PSP games on Vita: Sony shows how

Shares

While Sony has saved you the headache of paying to port your UMD-based PSP games over to Vita, the company's adamant that backwards-compatibility remains a selling point for the system. To demonstrate this, the PlayStation Blog has a lengthy list of PSP titles and PlayStation Minis already set up for Vita download.

If the title you want is a PlayStation Store item, you'll be given the option at purchase to download it to Vita via WiFi – or re-download it from the Store's Download List if you've already paid. If it's sitting on your PS3, however, you'll be connecting via USB and heading to PSV's Content Manager section to port the title over to the Vita's internal memory.

Here's Sony's list of the titles currently ready for Vita download. The company stresses that updates to the list will be frequent and imminent. If your favorite game isn't on the list, Sony doesn't want you panicking... but then, a good Internet Panic is exactly what would make this week go by faster, so we say go right ahead and freak out. Speaking of freak outs, be ready for one long list of games:

Not gonna lie: Immediately looked for GTA: Chinatown Wars and Angry Birds minis on the list and had an attack of sad within 30 seconds. But it's launch. I expect this all to be temporary.

What you guys should realize is that just because a game isn't on the list, it doesn't mean that it's unplayable on the Vita, I've read comments from importers on other sites that for example Valkyria Chronicles 2 is very playable. This list is just games that work 100% flawless on the Vita, and the research in this article is kinda poorly done since it leaves out important facts like this. At the same time it does not translate to that every game is at least somewhat playable.

I've always stayed true to Sony when it comes to the PS3...but they are just asking for me to turn down the Vita for a 3DS now. At least the 3DS can play older DS games...you're telling me I have to re-buy some PSP games, while other top notch PSP games like Kingdom Hearts and Crisis Core aren't even available for the Vita?
  • Corsair89 - February 9, 2012 9:05 p.m.

No Crisis Core, Birth by Sleep, Valkyria Chronicles II, or Valkyrie Profile?! Fuck the Vita!! Jk, the list is pretty good. It actually has quite I few titles that I didn't expect it too have. Looking forward to launch!

no angry birds (psp mini)? nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
  • jiodjflak - February 9, 2012 6:21 p.m.

No Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker? sony, i am disappoint
  • CrKnight - February 9, 2012 5:56 p.m.

It's a decent list, but it's missing quite a few hit games and is mainly made up of remakes. Games like Bomberman '94 and King of fighters '94 and '95 are available, but not Crisis Core or Kingdom Hearts?
  • amaro57 - February 9, 2012 3:52 p.m.

No Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep?... *eye twitch*
  • slimjim441 - February 9, 2012 6:23 p.m.

IKR? I bought a PSP for just that game alone (and it was really the only game worth getting...). I'd buy it again if it became downloadable. KH was the deciding factor for me, but it looks like I won't be getting a PSV anytime soon.
  • coltsfanca - February 9, 2012 11:18 p.m.

I don't own a PSP, but I thought it would be nice for me to get a Vita and get Kingdom Hearts + Crisis Core, to start out with. Now it defeats the purpose of me buying a Vita since it can't play those games anyways when more interested in playing past games.
  • JMarsella09 - February 9, 2012 3:44 p.m.

Good list but it's missing valkyria chronicles 2
  • SomeOddGuy - February 9, 2012 3:25 p.m.

The list is quite sizable in third party title support(which is primarily where my interest had lie) though I note how unusual it is that Sony has omitted over 90% of its first party titles for the system, especially all the titles people were given free at some point(purchase of PSP Go system during promotional period, Sony's apology gift to all registered users). Wonder what made them omit so many titles from their own catalog of games... At least Patapon 2 is on the list since that was the only one I had purchased.
  • hunter-vinsandwich - February 9, 2012 3:20 p.m.

Chrisat, the original reason I got a PSP was for Dracula X, so I'm with you there. Granted, my 3DS is holding up pretty damn well and shows signs of kicking up, so I see no reason to get a PSVita, like, ever, so oh well.
  • hunter-vinsandwich - February 9, 2012 3:19 p.m.

I didn't realize the PSP had this many games to begin with. :x Mine just collects dust.
  • lemur - February 9, 2012 3:14 p.m.

I'm glad to see that I can still play patapon on my PS vita.
  • SPAZFM - February 9, 2012 3:01 p.m.

    No metal gear games .....
  • chrisat928 - February 9, 2012 3:02 p.m.

The HD Collection is coming to Vita.
  • chrisat928 - February 9, 2012 2:57 p.m.

The only UMD game I have that isn't on the list, that I care about playing again is Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles.
