Pac-Man survey asks fans to choose new art style

Pac-Man has been updated, scaled down, re-invented and taken back to his arcade roots, but Namco is turning to its fanbase to decide the next style for the haunted pellet gobbler. The Pac-Man Facebook page was updated yesterday with a survey on a new visual direction and potential platforms for a new game in the classic franchise.

The survey's first question asks readers to decide between four motifs for Pac-Man and his ghostly pursuers, ranging from computer-rendered attitude to muted mid-century cartoon tones. The survey also asks where users tend to play the majority of their casual games, if anywhere.

Regardless of interest in another Pac-Man update, which style looks the most appealing?

E None of the above. Though if I had a gun at my head I would chose D because of the whole Nightmare Before Christmas thing it has going.

It's a tie between C and D. They have this extremely stylized look that looks very good.

    D. Definitely D.

I like B. The pink glow from the ghosts' eyes gives me warm, old moldy arcade feelings from my childhood when every hotel and campground had a pacman machine running by the pool area. Pac himself looks like a '30s old time toon.

B or D for me. The latter looks, like Redeater said, something quite like that, and the former looks the most likely to have Yakety Sax playing in the background, lol.
  • ThatGamerDude - October 2, 2012 2:15 p.m.

Eh, B or D look just about right. A looks too ugly to be a game and C looks better suited for a Pac-Man cartoon.
  • shawksta - October 2, 2012 2:20 p.m.

C looks like it could fit right in with Cartoon Network and D looks like something out of Tim Burton
  • J-Fid - October 2, 2012 2:55 p.m.

    I like D. It's different, but I like it.
  • alexfruen - October 2, 2012 3:02 p.m.

B suits the style more than the others, its reminiscent of the old graphics from the arcade cabinets, The others just dont look like, or remind me of pacman. 3D doesnt suit it all all, C looks too much like sonic or anime and D is just freaky.

I'd probably go with C for clyde, who for some strange reason is miising.
  • GoldenEagle1476 - October 2, 2012 4:30 p.m.

    B or D

Pish to the lot of them. I haven't got any time for anyone who hasn't got the balls to decide upon their own visual style and who turns to crowd-gunk namby-pamby pander, market-researched cookie-cutter non-stick gash. Lazy. Have some vision.

D for sure. I love how lanky he is and how the ghosts are actually a touch on the scary side. They could do some cool stuff with making them look scared and vulnerable within that style.
  • Sinosaur - October 2, 2012 5:14 p.m.

Why are there only three ghosts? Also, all of them but A might work out alright, but C & D edge out B
  • angelusdlion - October 2, 2012 5:18 p.m.

    d> none of the above.
  • Annihilator820 - October 2, 2012 5:55 p.m.

My personal favorite is D, that style could really do a lot to break the same-old feel of a new Pac-Man game without taking a more retarded reboot route. For some reason, it reminds me a little bit of Ghost Trick, at least with the sharp, clean lines. Also, "dem ghosts." C is also pretty good, kinda like a lighter version of D. Could work as well as D, but less dark. B is just a little too Saturday morning cartoon-ish for my taste, and A just looks like bland 90s mass-produced CGI crap.
  • masterjoe123 - October 2, 2012 6:37 p.m.

I like B. D is too dark for a character like Pac-Man, and i just think A and C are unappealing.
  • mavericksummers - October 2, 2012 7:54 p.m.

    d is the obvious choice

Gotta be D, it evokes old-school Disney animation and there's nothing quite like in the game industry at the moment. A&C have too much 90's game extremitude, and while B is a bit more SNES-era Nintendo art, D stands out the most by far.
