Modern Warfare 2 Spec Ops guide

Infinity Ward doesn’t do things by halves, and they’ve made the most varied, challenging and replayable co-op mode since forever with Spec Ops. It consists of 23 missions over five different stages, with one to three stars awarded for each depending on difficulty level (one for regular, two for hardened, three for veteran). What you have here is our guide to nailing all 23 missions on Veteran mode, which should be used with two things in mind: first, the later levels are damn hard and need bags of practice, and second, Spec Ops is designed for two people and only a madman would try any of this on solo.

The Pit

The mission: The Army Ranger assault course from MW2’s opening level.
Veteran conditions: Complete the course in 35 seconds or less.
How to do it: This is the training level from the opening of the single-player campaign, and to nail the three stars you need to complete it in under 35 seconds. Easily done: make sure you and your co-op friend split the level into left and right, using ADS (Aim Down Sights - it’s not only quicker, but you have to use the steady aim to hit top marks). When entering the building, the guy on the right should take the targets on the roof, and as you head up the stairs you can save time by doubling up on the two sets of targets (they can be lined up so one shot downs both). If you use the default SCAR-H you’ll be just running out of ammo as you hit the ground again, but don’t reload, just switch to pistol, take down the last set of targets and sprint to the finish.

Sniper Fi

The mission: An enemy attack set in a snowy industrial area.
Veteran conditions: Survive five waves of enemy attackers.
How to do it: Fairly straightforward. One of you should take the front edge of the platform you start on and use the sniper to catch enemies heading down the main strip, while the other should grab the predator missile briefcase (and use it to take down incoming trucks and troop transports) and keep an eye on the helipad to the front left of the platform. It’s worth putting some claymores at the base of the ladder to the left of the platform too.

The mission: Hunt hostiles through the mazey Brazilian favela.
Veteran conditions: Kill 50 enemies and no more than three civilians.
How to do it: The key is sticking together, as the shanty town is so intricately plotted and there are very few secure points of cover. Enemies have a habit of popping up in unseen windows and rooftops. Make sure you grab the AA-12 equipped with hearbeat sensor which his located near your initial spawn point, as it’s super handy for spotting incoming attackers. There’s no penalty for being defensive – work slowly through the alleyways and buildings.

The mission: Evade enemy patrols through snowy woods to the extraction point.
Veteran conditions: Sharper enemies, increased damage.
How to do it: Don’t go loud. That’s the big rule. Every time you’re spotted by enemy patrols extra soldiers with dogs arrive to murder you. Memorise the position and movement of the patrols (four at the start, then a man and dog walking up the path, then three guards smoking cigarettes and so on), and make sure you’ve got a kill shot before you pull the trigger. Work through larger groups by taking down the man at the back so the others won’t notice.

The mission: Move from one end of an iron bridge to the extraction point at the other.
Veteran conditions: Sharper enemies, increased damage.
How to do it: With no time limit, reaching the other side is a matter of using cover patiently, sticking close to your partner for easy revivals, and not getting blown up by standing too close to exploding cars. The only real excitement is when the enemy gunship arrives at the halfway mark. The bridge cracks across the middle – have one of you stay covered in the lower part ready to revive the other, who grabs an RPG to take out the chopper.

The mission: A remake of COD4’s Hunted, with one player using an AC-130 to help the other reach the extraction point.
Veteran conditions: Reach the extraction point in seven minutes.
How to do it: Here the two of you are split up – one manning the guns of an overhead AC-130 while the other dashes through the level on the ground to reach an extraction point. The runner should take the SCAR-H with thermal site from the start, to help pick out enemies in friendly-fire smoke. That said, the AC-130 should be doing most of the fighting (try 40 mm shots for enemies in ones and and twos, and 105 mm for big, meaty groups) while the guy on the ground will be mostly hiding in dark corners doing his best not to be exploded. What he can do is paint targets using his laser sighter, which comes in handy when enemy choppers arrive carrying reinforcements. They’re hard to see from the air, but once spotted, easy to take down.

Body Count

The mission: Clear enemy targets while defending a diner in suburban America.
Veteran conditions: Score 30,000 points.
How to do it: The sensible way to do this is to grab the thermal sight SCAR-H from the spread of guns outside the diner and take ranged shots at the enemies exiting the gas station while the other fires on the attackers coming from the side entrance. You’ll need around 30 grunt kills to hit the target, which is easy if you stay near enough to revive each other and don’t let the diner be over-run. You can also try grabbing the RPG and popping the troop transport early on.

Bomb Squad

The mission: Disarm three bombs in the Brazilian Favela.
Veteran conditions: Complete the mission in under five minutes.
How to do it: You don’t have time to engage in stationary battles. To avoid time-costing backtracking take the bomb in the marketplace first, to the right of the start point. Pick up the M240 at the start. When the first bomb’s done, switch to the M1014 holographic for the second bomb, which is all about moving quickly through buildings and picking off targets. And for the third, throw grenades like you’re tossing bread to ducks, and then dash in and clean up.

The mission: A rerun of the snowmobile race from Cliffhanger in the single-player campaign.
Veteran conditions: Finish the course in 70 seconds.
How to do it: No tricks here – this one’s a matter of learning the course, staying in open space, and not making any sudden or sharp turns. At the beginning of the race hit the accelerator just as ‘Go!’ appears after the countdown and you’ll get a quick start. You don’t need to attack the other snowmobiles, but it helps to get them out of the way. And on the final downhill stretch, keep your eyes ahead of your own vehicle and make gentle adjustments.

Big Brother

The mission: Based on the Wolverines level from the single-player, one player uses a helicopter gun to guide the other to the extraction point.
Veteran conditions: Reach the extraction point in ten minutes.
How to do it: Call out targets quick, and don’t be shy with the ammo – absolutely hose targets, using ADS to slow the chopper down, and take out as many explosive objects – cars, gas tanks – as you can. Crucially, when the runner hits the diner roof at the very end, make sure he runs straight towards the green smoke to give the chopper a clear line of fire.

For breach & Clear, it's easy to get 3 stars.. when you blow up the wall, shoot as many as you can in slow motion, and then run like hell to the hole lol, i did it first try on 3 stars after seeing how short a stage it was on 1 star

In breach and clear, it is possible but hard to run straight through the whole thing, getting a very small time. Use the starting gun to shoot most of the enimeies in the first room when time is slowed down. Then switch to your shot gun, run, not sprint, blasting anyone in your way. When you get to the bit where the riot shield come out start sprinting and if your lucky you should get through the middle of them! then just sprint as fast as you can to the hole and goe down! I have a time of 12.53 seconds, no joke!

I got 3 stars on The Pit with a Usp45 and an M9 on my own
  • Dalibor - January 21, 2010 10:19 a.m.

I did the pit all by myself & got all three stars. It's possible. The problem I have with spec-ops is that some buddies that I invite cannot join at all. It always states that it could not connect to the host. I thought it was b/c of the NAT type but we both have it as 2 so I don't know why it does this. It also does this in MP, the invites are useless for some of my online buddies. So I just join their game by "join session" feature, prob with this is that at times we are on the opposite teams lol.

Snatch and Grab kills me D: The hard bit is the big valley after i get the intel if I run out i get shot up, if I stay and try to snipe 2 Jugs come up behind me XD

For Homeland Security, start off by grabing the Intervention and keep the SCAR. Grab the sentry gun and run into the diner. Grab the other sentry gun in the diner and place them both behind the counter on the left side facing the front windows. ALL enemies entering from the front entrance (1 of only 2 entrances) pass infront of the windows before coming in the door. The 2 sentry guns annihilate all the troops coming in that door while being proteted by the counter. (which amasses to about 120 troops killed by your sentry guns...usful little things eh...). Meanwhile you crouch behind the counter and you'll notice your gun just comes over the counter if you move back from it a bit. Just use your SCAR to take out any of the VERY FEW troops that make it past your sentry guns and the ones that enter through the back door. When crouched behind the counter, for some reason it is very hard for the enemy to hit you, even if they are standing right on the other side 2 feet away from you. They also cannot throw grenades behind the counter. Whether it's bad aim or the structure of the diner.....NO grenades make it behind the counter. If your injured just lay down behind the counter right up against the side away from the wall. The counter is high enough that the enemies can't hit you there so you can always recover...just point your gun at the opening at the end just incase one comes around the corner. Take out the ALL hostiles first. Then, from the cover of the diner (Rendering enemy predator missiles useless), take out any helicopters or BTRs through the windows. If you run out of RPGs use te intervention you brought in. Otherwise grab enemy guns when ammo is out of the SCAR. Just repeat this every wave and victory is guaranteed even on veteran...almost.

Armor Piercing is probably the easiest Ops mission there is ...even solo when using this method. At the start grab BOTH the Intervention and the Barrett .50 cal. Travel up the rig, killing 2 or so juggernaughts until you reach the steps that are just after the first breaching room in the Wetwork Op. At the topof the stairs you turn right to a large open area with large beams on the ground for cover. Stay behind the beams and look down the right side. ALL the juggernaughts will come from that area to the right of the two large round tanks at the far end and you can see them from VERY far away. Just use the Barrett .50 cal to kill the single ones. ALWAYS RELOAD EACH TIME AFTER YOU KILL ONE. MAKE SURE BOTH GUNS HAVE FULL CLIPS. They are so far away when you start shooting, you even have time to duck down, reload and pop back up to kill them at a reasonable distance away if you happened to have missed an unbelievable amount of times. When 2 come at you at once, start with the intervention. They are close together so you'll probably be hitting them alternatly because the shots slow them down. When you need to reload the Intervention, DON'T! Instead SWITCH to your Barrett .50 cal and use that clip to take the last or both of them (heavily injured) out. Just hold that position and do the same thing. Takes about 7 minutes and only one time do 2 juggernaughts come at once. Just remember to ALWAYS RELOAD after a kill if there isn't any more around. It took me only 2 tries for this level using this method (it was on veteran too).

On Breach & Clear I killed zero enemies. We just used our flashbangs and ran. =P
  • sretter - December 23, 2009 4:15 p.m.

I done it within days... only hardish one was Snatch and Grab
  • AMayer - December 22, 2009 10:33 p.m.

No offense, but me and my buddy took down snatch and grab no problem. We just kept the snipers and used Scar-H Thermals. Juggernauts hate that shit. But, really thanks for Armor Piercing and High Explosive those were the only two i kept getting stuck on.

for the breach and clear, take cover behing the shower things right infront of u after breaching, and take your time, but not to much, and clear the first room,go to the opening for the next room and spam all ur grenades over the structure in the middle of second room, were all the shields are huddled behind(you wont see them youll throw grenades over structure), one throws all flashs the other, frags, then repeat only now u will both be throwing other type of grenade. you will both have auto shottys (aa-12, stryker)imediately after grenades, sprint around stucture, the shields should be dead or recovering, rape face with shottys (if there are some still standing, if there on ground, dont bother) as u run for hole in ground, dont stop running. Recap: clear first room, spam grenades, run to hole. easy peasy. Nice article GR! much needed thanks!

Oh mah gawd, these are too friggin hard!!!
  • FlyinHawaiian13 - December 22, 2009 7:37 a.m.

if you get spotted on acceptable losses run back to the spawn, take cover behind the dumpster, and just let them run in single file to die. like any normal army they'll lose interest eventually
  • key0blade - December 22, 2009 5:38 a.m.

  • Cwf2008 - December 22, 2009 3:44 a.m.

Ha are you kidding Nazi Zombies is a million times better than Spec Ops.
  • Dexsus - December 22, 2009 3:06 a.m.

Actually, on Hidden theres 3 snipers in the first field, 5 in the next and then 5 in the last on veteran. Me and my bro just did it earlier.
  • Mirako - December 22, 2009 1:22 a.m.

Me and my mate are close just Homeland Security and Snatch and Grab! Thanks for the Guide GR
  • jesse_b - December 22, 2009 12:21 a.m.

yea same here me and my spec-ops partner was done bout two weeks and we have our guide up too... check us out
  • tomir205 - December 22, 2009 12:17 a.m.

iive done all of them on veteran with my housemate! the last one if one person stands at the bottom where you start and the other runs upstairs to trigger the juggernaughts you can look up and snipe them as they come down the stairs ... bit simpler than the 'dash' and door block option!
  • Cool - December 21, 2009 11:44 p.m.

almost there. got 67 stars. For some reason snatch and grab has evaded 2 or 3 stars from me. ARGH!
