Master Chief's reign at the top was brief - very brief. After just one week, the game that broke all the Xbox records has to settle for fourth place, while its main rival blasts its way back to the top. Which just demonstrates how great the desire for Rockstar's mobster still is, particularly since one in every 10 PS2 owners in Britain already bought a copy of the game in the first week.
But that top spot doesn't look that that comfortable for CJ yet as EA's Need For Speed: Underground 2 has made a dramatic arrival by slamming into second place. With the PS2 version shifting 70% of all the copies the game, it has become the eighth fastest-selling PS2 game ever in the UK. Which is fantastic news for EA when you consider that the original Underground (a game that is now a year old) is still lurking in the lower reaches of the chart.
Finally released through Vivendi - and finally playable through Steam - comes Valve's own Half-Life 2, which now ranks as the third fastest selling PC title ever in the UK. More importantly, Gordon pushes Master Chief into an uncomfortable position just ahead of those greasy grapplers in WWE Smackdown vs Raw.
Despite all of this movement at the top, things have been far quieter in the lower reaches of the fabulous fun 40, with only The Incredibles breaking into the top 20, although with the movie hitting cinemas this week it could well go much higher. Even further towards the chart's nether-regions, Medal Of Honor: Pacific Assault has beached at 25, Mortal Kombat Deception has struck out at 28, while Singstar Party brings up the rear at 40.
But don't panic because next week is already promising more swapping of positions than a Claudio Ranieri team talk. First-person shooters seem to be the flavour of the month already with Halo 2 and Half-Life 2 riding high but, if you want more bobbing guns, then check back here in seven days to see Metroid Prime: Echoes, Killzone and GoldenEye: Rogue Agent all battling it out for a place in the top 10. With Jak 3, Tom's Clancy's Ghost Recon 2 and Fight Club also looking to make an impact, it should be another busy week at the tills.
