Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D delayed till 2012? Has 3DS lost another 2011 game?

When the 3DS debuted at the 2010 E3 one of the first demos to catch our eye was Hideo Kojima’s three dimensional remake of his PS2 classic Metal Gear Solid 3. The remake took advantage of the new system’s features pretty well, and when we saw a fuller version of it at E3 2011 we were still impressed. Though a release date hadn’t been given, we assumed it was this year (rumors swirled it was coming in November), but today a French Konami press rep said that the remake wouldn’t get to consumers until early 2012. Merde!

The source of the comment comes via GoNintendo and a French representative for the Japanese publisher, which we felt left too many things to chance, so we checked in with Konami ourselves. After checking with a US press representative for the publisher, we got the very noncommittal “We have not announced MGS 3DS North American shipdate yet,” so we remain in the dark about whether we’ll play Snake’s 1960s adventure this year. Still, we wouldn’t be too surprised if this report proves true, as it would join a growing number of third-party titles being delayed on the new handheld.

This annoying rumor is part of a string a poor news for the 3D console, as it struggles with third-party support. MGS3D would follow Sega delaying Shinobi and Crush3D on the system, and Capcom outright cancelling Mega Man Legends 3. Another unfortunate effect of this delay, if true, is that it would come out after the HD remake of the PS2 original hits PS3/360 near the year’s end. Does anyone but the most diehard MGS fan have room for that many remakes? We’ll let you know when we get confirmation either way on this, but hopefully we won’t have to wait until September’s Tokyo Game Show (the epicenter of all Japanese gaming news) to find out. In the meantime, why not enjoy the mega-smooth theme to Snake Eater?

As a huge Metal Gear fan I have no reason to complain. Kojima actually cares about making games right, so if his studio wants to take another year to make it an even better game so be it.

Dam, this is a bombshell i did not want to hear about. One of the main reasons which I brought a 3ds. Big MGS fan, 3 being my favourite of the series and believe the new twist which the 3ds would bring the game would be epic, 3d graphics and Gyroscope being some. After completing legend of zelda my 3ds is again being left empty!! :(

This version seems to actually look worse than the Ps2 version, which is especially sad after the amazing original e3 demo they showed. Also, isn't the Ps3 MGS HD collection able to be played on the Vita too? Doesn't that seem rediculous to pay £35 for this on 3DS when it's coming out on other platforms including MGS2 and Peace Walker for the same price?

The thing I find stupid about this release is that according to Amazon it is the same price as the HD collection. So for £30 you can either purchase A HD remake of MGS 2, 3 and Peace Walker or just MGS 3 on an inferior system that will have graphics vey similar to the original version. The sale reason for purchasing is A Gimmick that is usually turned off after ten minutes? Difficult choice then

Theres still some other games coming out.

@Spacegrass As much as I'd love to call you a troll, that seems to be the unfortunate reality of it. It would be REALLY nice if we could start seeing some original titles for this thing that didn't have 'Mario' in there somewhere. This is why I STILL don't have a 3DS, despite owning pretty much every Nintendo console ever (bar DSi XL)

So, are there any upcoming 3DS games that aren't remakes?

Who cares there's so much other great crap coming out from October to December might as well save some for later and with 3or 4 other amazing games coming in 2012 this will make it just that much better

The helmet looks like the Enclave helmet from Fallout 2

No real reason to get this on 3DS if you have a PS3 or 360.

Screw the 3DS, hurry up and give us MGS1-3 on PS3! THE PEOPLE WANT HD NEKKED RAIDEN! ... Whaddya mean "That's just me"...?
