If they make a prequel it shouldn't be about the first contact wars, they have been documented in the original mass effect trilogy and the novels so there wouldn't be a lot of choices as the outcome has been decided. The first book also mentioned that only a couple of hundred persons died on both sides. After the Turians took over a planet populated by humans both sides prepared for full out war but then the Council stepped in to keep things under control. Playing as the protheans or any other race in the previous cycle does mean that we allready know how it is going to end, playing as any other race from that cycle also includes being enslaved too, yay about that! So if you ask me they really should make a sequel, but how they are going to include everything we have done so far could be difficult. Is it smart of them to keep asking these questions in twitter btw? They got a nice big shitstorm about the ending (though I didn't really have problems with it) because they made promises a lot of people felt they didn't keep. They should know that there is no way they are going to include all the suggestions they get on twitter so I can see this blowing up in their face.

I like the idea of a prequel, but a SW:KOTOR style prequel. Set it in the era of the previous Reaper invasion, have Protheans, have all new alien races! That way you can work in a different style of weapons and powers without messing up your established canon. I was skeptical about KOTOR (how can you have a Star Wars game set so far in the past, without your existing good/evil set up?) but Bioware pulled it off. I think they could do it with this provided they were given license to do so by EA. I agree that the story would perhaps be ultimately less rewarding, as you have to end up with the destruction of the Protheans, but there's enough scope there for choosing HOW you get there given the relative sparsity of information in the current trilogy.

I'd go for a prequel. There's just so much of the Mass Effect universe that we haven't seen. Ideally, it would be set right after the First Contact war between the Humans and Turians ended. That way, you could have a politically tense background to serve as backstory. It should also be much smaller scale. Well, by smaller scale I mean in terms of storyline. Ditch the galaxy-wide threats and concentrate on exploration and character interaction. I think the fans would go apeshit for a fully-explorable galaxy, with your own completely customisable character, who, naturally, has his/her/this one's own ship to go careering around the galaxy in. As much as I love your crew and squadmates, the game would benefit from having an entirely new cast, and should have no mention of previous main characters. Sure, it would be fun to run into some of the more minor characters from time to time, such as Matriarch Aethyta or Captain Kirrahe, but running into Liara or Garrus would screw the continuity too much. Oh, and I guess more RPG elements as well. Almost forgot; SPACE COMBAT, or at least the option to fly around. So ideally, my version of the game would be a mix of KOTOR, Skyrim, Mass Effect 1 and old-school Final Fantasy (by that I mean the awesome bits of getting to fly around on an airship with your party.). Now, tell me that wouldn't be a great game.

A midquel. Either of the choices he's presented are embarassingly predictable.

I guess Sequel, seeing as a prequel would be about the first contact war, and that would be kind of boring.

Love to see it set during the Krogan Rebellions of Rachni Wars. Can't remember if humans were around during that time period, but you'd still be able to play as any of the other races.

Humans weren't around, the Krogan rebellions happened around the end of the US Civil War.

SEQUEL!!! From what I hear, the Shepard saga is over, and it should start with another person's story, and include a "mini-prequel" like Dragon Age: Origins had. And, while it should be another person's story, I'm pro-Garrus. Don't think ANYONE has any complaints with Garrus. If he doesn't make it into the next game, no biggie. Just start the series with a different person's story.

SEQUEL!!! Prequel is the easy way out that in the long run dont make any sense, cause you have to tie it with the stuff that's happend before... SEQUEL!!! And Bioware, you know everyone want's it cos... Well you know...

They have a serious problem in deciding where to take the series next, because ultimately how can anything be as interesting as the fate of the galaxy and the malevolent Reapers which threatened it? It's a similar situation between what happened with Dragon Age, and Dragon Age II. The first game you are responsible for fighting the blight which threatens the entire kingdom, but in the second it's just about Kirkwall. Dragon Age II was a decent game in my opinion, but the scale of the story left something to be desired. I wonder if they can come up with a premise that interests me, but I guess I usually prefer taking a story forward as opposed to prequels.

I'm always down for a sequel over a prequel. Pre's are too limited by the endpoint at which the narrative is forced to conclude. Plus it winds up being about characters to which we have less emotional investment. Make a sequel, put us in the shoes of a new character who gets caught up in "The Search For Shepard", and make Shepard either the big villain or big anti-hero you go up against.

Forget Mass Effect just now and make a new KOTOR!

How can there be a sequel when you've already revealed that a group of autistic children playing with a snow globe imagined it all?
  • FoxdenRacing - November 20, 2012 12:22 p.m.

What I'd want the most? A side story. Nothing directly in-line with the original trilogy...think KoToR vs Ep1/2/3. They have a huge, rich universe there to explore. Human vs Turian, Rachni Wars, Krogan Rebellions, Anderson vs Saren [though that wouldn't be enough for its own trilogy], even the race that existed before the last time the Reapers showed up. It's entirely possible to have a fully-fleshed-out game that has nothing to do with Shepard; the only caveat is that we aren't going to see another game on the epic proportions of the first trilogy without going into another reaper cycle, or risking some serious DBZ syndrome.
  • oryanbelt - November 20, 2012 11:57 a.m.

I remember talk of a prequel idea that starred Anderson during his time as a Spectre as an intriguing idea. Having Saren return as an antagonist for the story would be interesting as well

I hope not because the 1st novel already covered that.
